Driving through California snowbanks:
Snowbanks in Soda Springs reached as high as 12 feet, as over 80 inches of snow have fallen in the last seven days. #CAwx via accuweather/Brandon Clement
@Geewhizpat mom why do they call it the Sierra Nevada?
@guacamayan In 1776, Pedro Font's map applied the name to the range currently known as the Sierra Nevada. The literal translation is "snowy mountains", from sierra "a range of mountains", 1610s, from Spanish sierra "jagged mountain range", lit. "saw", from Latin serra "a saw"; and from fem. of Spanish nevado "snowy".
@Geewhizpat i don't know, doesn't look all that snowy to me
@guacamayan California's Sierra Nevada range 80 days ago versus today.
These mountains likely currently hold the biggest snowpack on the planet.
