@Woodchaz To answer my own question these is probably my favourites atm:
Sauti Sol for some gengetone/alternative pop-rock from Kenya
Ismaël Lô for some Mbalax/mande pop from Senegal
Tiken Jah Fakoly for some African reggae from the Ivory Coast
Wizkid and Adekunle GOLD for some modern afropop/azontobeats from Nigeria.
Fatoumata Diawara (Mali), Nina Ogot (Kenya) and Nikita Kering' (Kenya) for some lovely alternative folk-pop as well.
@Woodchaz Nice. I'd love to have a collection of like that but no space so digital it is.
Totally agree about Ali Farka Touré. I have been listening to his and Toumani Diabaté's albums a bit over the last week.
I have listened to both Cheikh Lô and Youssou N'Dour a bit but not Baaba Maal so will check them out.
Madagascar definitely counts 🙂
I think my favourite Malagasy artist so far is probably Hanitra Ranaivo, especially her song Maloy Aho.
So much left to discover 🙂
@Winterbay
They do take up space. They were a bitch to move & I had to jettison some.
A few favorites are missing. I have a collection of Madagascan folk music and #MasterMusiciansOfJajouka. Hopefully they didn't go to Goodwill...
Re Madagascan music, I mainly know Tarika & Rossy. And random stuff I find on YouTube. Love those tubular zithers.
Maal and NDour were early finds, thanks to #PeterGabriel. You gotta check out Djam Leeli, by Baaba Maal and Mansour Seck. Magical.
