We support the blockade of the Davos private airport by @DebtforClimate, demanding debt cancellation for the Global South. Thousands of private jets are using this airport to attend the World Economic Forum, where financial decisions strangling the Global South are made.#wef23 1/

According to this study by @Greenpeace & @CEDelft (👉https://www.greenpeace.org/static/planet4-international-stateless/2023/01/1f6a7653-ce-delft_co2-emissions-from-private-flights-to-the-world-economic-forum.pdf), the ~500 flights to @Davos #wef22 in private jets last year emitted 7,300 tons of CO2, equivalent to the CO2 produced by 350,000 cars in the same period. 2/
Of these flights, 53% were short-haul flights below 750 km that could have easily been train or car trips, with 38% flying ultra-short distances of under 500 km. The shortest flight recorded was only 21 km! 3/
Private jets are the most polluting mode of transport. Their use by economic elites shows they think they live in a planet on their own. It's a shameful lie that @wef claims their mission is to limit temperature below 1.5°C 😤(👉https://www.weforum.org/topics/climate-change). 4/
Climate Change

The COP26 climate summit in 2021 served to focus the world’s attention on the steps necessary to avert catastrophe, heading into the next version of the talks being staged in late 2022. Despite the stated aim of the Paris Agreement on climate change to limit warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels - by having countries voluntarily reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases - the world is on track to exceed that threshold. Even 1.5°C in warming is likely to lead to punishing environmental impacts, and widespread displacement. This briefing is based on the views of a wide range of experts from the World Economic Forum’s Expert Network and is curated in partnership with Yale University.

People in the top 1% of the consumption distribution bear a disproporionate responsibility for CO2 emissions and thus for climate change. And aviation is a major part of this. (Source:@zoe_institute) 5/

It is then absolutely necessary to #BanPrivatejets#TaxFrequentFliers, and #MakePollutersPay their climate debt. This includes cancelling Global South financial debt. https://makethempay.info/ #MakeThemPay
