The most inevitable bound-to-happen thing in #Edtech ever? Turnitin's planning to fight AI with AI https://www.turnitin.com/blog/sneak-preview-of-turnitins-ai-writing-and-chatgpt-detection-capability/
Sneak preview of Turnitin’s AI writing and ChatGPT detection capability

An introduction to our AI Innovation Lab to give you a first-hand glimpse of what our technology (in development) can do

@BenPatrickWill (Inserts LetThemFight.gif.) Noting too the request to teachers for (presumably) free labor to help "build the next generation of Turnitin’s products and services." I'm also waiting for some similar products/promises from the online proctoring crowd.
@BenPatrickWill @mguhlin We worry about SkyNet taking over, but our oblivion may just be as victims in a crossfire between warring artificial intelligences. I’d love for one of them to be TurnItIn.
@BenPatrickWill @Autumm Oh my, they said the quiet part right out loud: “Our model has been trained specifically on academic writing sourced from a comprehensive database, as opposed to solely publicly available content.”

@kate @BenPatrickWill

I was just writing an email about that very line.

Gee I wonder where that database came from? 🤔

@Autumm @BenPatrickWill “We used you to make your students give us free stuff (we win!) now we’re going to protect you from your students using their stuff we took (we win again!)” while on the other side “We’re using you to keep training our models so if you assign this to students, we also win!” The only faint prospect of joy is that all this will outflank Course Hero and make their giant database of stolen stuff redundant.

@kate @BenPatrickWill

Shit Kate - You just have a way of nailing it don't you!

Is it okay with you if I screenshot this to share with others not on Masto?

@Autumm @kate @BenPatrickWill I think you forgot that they’ll still charge you an enterprise license fee too, for the pleasure of giving them all that free labour.
