huh so discord updates on non-ubuntu linux just got really janky
if you're not running ubuntu you have to just download the files and figure it out on your own. awkward.
@noelfb might be worth checking out the Discord flatpak on Flathub.
@oddfox if i install it from flatpak is there a way to run it nicely without the `flatpak run com.discordapp.Discord`? right now i can just launch it nicely from my normal app search.
@noelfb it should show up in your typical app launcher shortly after install

@noelfb

There should automatically be an entry. If not, you can create the desktop file[1] yourself, set `Exec=flatpak run ...` and other fields like the name. Then put it in an appropriate folder (probably ~/.local/share/applications). Depending on what you use to list applications, you might need to update some database.

@noelfb Well, isn't this the whole linux philosophy in a way? To be left alone (not abandoned, just giving you some alone time, to let you know what you are doing.) Sure, more documentation and support is a must, though I thought that linux is more about being your own. Figuring out things and having the joy of figuring out things. Honestly I just think these kind of stuff as Game engines and Game Frameworks. More control, a little bit more work to do.
@noelfb that's how it's been for a long time, i think most people gravitate towards the flatpak
@noelfb according to the arch wiki discord page, adding "SKIP_HOST_UPDATE": true to ~/.config/discord/settings.json bypasses this. worked for me on fedora :) don't know the potential side effects of this though, so ymmv 🐧
@kateulator @noelfb you shouldn't do this if you haven't installed discord from a package manager. If you downloaded the deb or tar from the website in the first place, you'll just end up never updating.

@kateulator @noelfb this is the only good solution, it just causes discord to not throw a hissy fit about it not being up to date and instead allows you to wait for your package maintainers to update it

which is really how it should work by default, imo

@noelfb they were always like this

@noelfb you can disable the update check so the app will still launch even if there is an update that you haven't installed

@noelfb yea, its been like that forever. Usually i just select the binary version, but this might be worth looking into: https://snug.moe/notes/99zg0rhtwu

Open Asar is a blessing, letting you skip an update is an amazing feature. Even on Arch it takes like a day for them to update the `discord` package, and normally I just wouldn't be able to use discord at all until the system package is updated. https://openasar.dev/ (📎1)
