Instance is another word for server. Mastodon is decentralized which means it runs on a distributed network of servers controlled by different parties, whereas facebook, Twitter etc are centralized and controlled by one company.

Mastodon can also work with other platforms. For example I am on Friendica but I can still interact with you even though you use another platform than I do.

@anders @medium Given that I'm on mastodon.world - if I went to mastodon dot something else and created another profile, that would be a new instance? (Though for me, I think there's no reason to do that because users on other servers can find me where I am)

Yes exactly.

And yes they can find you if they search for you using your address.
