I’m so late to the discussion but after learning about the anarq*ista catfishing shit I’m just like wow maybe I actually dodged a bullet by not being more friendly.

but now I have trust issues bc how did they manage to fool so many people and why was the p*do defense stuff not more well known? because I’m only just learning about it and I had several mutual followers in common, and none of them mentioned it

I gotta be more intentional about fielding my mutuals. I really just be following whoever looks sorta cool and doesn’t seem obviously shitty. We weren’t homies or nothin but wtf

I don’t think anyone should feel bad about falling for the act, I don’t. but this should be an opportunity to reflect and strategize on how to stop shit like this from happening in the first place and what to do when it inevitably happens again in the future

not that I really care about optics but it also just makes everyone around them look bad by association and takes away from their credibility. like if one person lies it’s on them, but if others repeat the lie, even if they’re unaware, they just look like liars too. proximity is often conflated with endorsement

@Frogluvr91 the pedo defense stuff actually came out a while ago, it's just that people didn't seem to care enough.

They fled to Mastodon after deactivating their account in the hopes that people on Fedi wouldn't know about what happened, if I had to guess.

I promptly told the admin of the instance they tried joining about what they'd said and they were promptly banned from this instance. Not sure what happened afterwards, though.

i think the answers are about given.. abusers are shady, people don't take it seriously enough, it gets forgotten, and continues where it can.
it was an abuser acting out a sexual fantasy, with layers of fabrication. and manipulating people. really gross.
the CSA theory stuff.. i doubt anyone made much sense of or noticed whatever bad takes they made. there are well known CSA apologist authors and if someone defends them, they could be naive, or a bad actor.
i vote instablock for it, but also because the authors are similar to this guy in approach. they also planned this for abuse using biases against others. it was abuse. and everyone should do better about abuse.
just, don't second guess yourself, because you are not the bad guy. he is. i was only distantly aware of the account, and vaguely recall sparse warnings, and tried to stay away.
 but abuse is a singular victim and community education issue until its not, and more harm happens. they were planning this and manipulating. in short, we need more whisper networks. and less friend requests. i am always here.

@rainrainrain thanks for saying that. I think underneath the confusion and anger is also fear, which abuse tends to inspire, like a fear of vulnerability. even being indirectly a target of abuse can be really scary, but I think you’re right, the answer to that is communicating with communities about potential threats, not perpetual isolation and paranoia. abusers already seek out people who are isolated and ignorant of what’s going on around them, so education and robust support networks are vital.

@Frogluvr91 One of the worst aspects of shit like that is the damage it does to our ability to trust each other. Without trust, there's no solidarity, and without that, no liberation. Praxis is somehow defending our capacity to trust, even with predators and enemies surrounding us
