If you boot Wizardry from the master disk, it halts and demands that you fast-copy the master disk. When boot from the copy, it prompts once for the master disk, then again for the copy, then you play from the copy.
A regular disk uses a two-nibble data field epilogue (DE AA), but the master disk uses a six-nibble data field epilogue (DE AA FF AD BE EF). So the master disk is copyable and appears unprotected, but the program knows how to distinguish.
Anyway, qkumba cracked it.
