Now THIS is an about box
One of the primary developers was named Andrew and the evil wizard is named Werdna and I spent ALMOST FORTY YEARS not realizing that Werdna is Andrew spelled backwards.
@a2_4am Got news for you about Trebor...
@a2_4am Hey, have you played Castlevania III or Symphony of the Night? Because you might wanna think about Alucard's role.
@a2_4am blessed are those who have an ear to hear!
@a2_4am ever wonder why M.U.L.E. is set on a planet called Irata?
@a2_4am Robert J. Woodhead later went on to found AnimEigo and has been doing an excellent job bringing Japanese animation to English audiences for decades now.

If you boot Wizardry from the master disk, it halts and demands that you fast-copy the master disk. When boot from the copy, it prompts once for the master disk, then again for the copy, then you play from the copy.

A regular disk uses a two-nibble data field epilogue (DE AA), but the master disk uses a six-nibble data field epilogue (DE AA FF AD BE EF). So the master disk is copyable and appears unprotected, but the program knows how to distinguish.

Anyway, qkumba cracked it.

@a2_4am but of course.
What’s the best modern emulator to play this?

@Rikkles Mini vMac has builds for all platforms: https://www.gryphel.com/c/minivmac/

Ample is a Mac-only targeted frontend for MAME that supports Apple II and Mac profiles: https://github.com/ksherlock/ample

Mini vMac - early Macintosh emulator

@a2_4am i didn’t know mini vMac. I forgot MAME emulates early macs. Going to try it on a Steam Deck, could be fun.
@a2_4am when I run it on mini vMac it says “this scenario disk is either damaged or write-protected” and I checked on my win11 box that the file is R/W
@Rikkles Sigh. Apparently vMac treats all .dc42 files as write-protected unless you recompile the emulator (!) to not do that. Maybe try to convert it to .dsk format? https://www.bigmessowires.com/2013/12/16/macintosh-diskcopy-4-2-floppy-image-converter/ (I have never used this particular tool.)
Macintosh DiskCopy 4.2 Floppy Image Converter | Big Mess o' Wires

@a2_4am that… sucks. I’ll take a look later, thanks for the pointer.
@Rikkles I recompiled it locally (for other reasons) and added that option too because dc42 is good and dsk is bad so I frequently forget that the default builds are bad in this way.
@a2_4am I should probably do that too.
Wiz I on the Mac has a UI that makes it an operating system. So funny.
@a2_4am this works perfectly
@a2_4am I still love that Andrew Greenberg & Robert Woodhead just made themselves the villains with reversed names. Straight up no hiding behind fiction.

@a2_4am

I was@obsessed with Wizardry back in the Apple II days and I have tried numerous Apple II emulators over the years to play it.

FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT PARRY PARRY PARRY !

@a2_4am what a screen! I didn’t even know Wiz1 was ported to the Mac
