Thank you to @FAIR and Ari Paul for this very thorough debunking of the problematic New Yorker attack piece on the People's CDC.

New Yorker Takes Aim at People Who Still Think Covid Is a Problem - FAIR

Corporate media’s overarching message is that it’s “time to move on,” and radicals holding on to precautions are impeding economic recovery.

One of the quotes highlighted in the piece is mine on the connections between anti-masking and white supremacy. This isn't mere speculation, as the New Yorker piece dishonestly frames it. It's based on a long history of studies on how health inequities play out.

Here's my original thread, which backs up the claims that white supremacy plays a role in the opposition to masking.

“This is also important: "White people who assumed the pandemic had a disparate effect on communities of color were less supportive of safety measures." Studies show white supremacy plays a role in the opposition to public health protections. (via https://t.co/uiL1O56928)”

While there's a lot of research that shows how racism plays a major role in health disparities, I also feel that it's important to say that the people who are impacted have every right to speak up about their lived experiences. We need to listen, and do better. Not dismiss them.

@luckytran You make such an important point. Still masking & SMDH at all of the folks (some of them loved ones) who’ve just given up. I appreciate your voice (followed you on Twitter & then found you here). Thank you.
@luckytran
Down here in #NewOrleans you definitely see it play out in white discomfort to Black people who are masking. Anywhere I go in town, it is consistently Black (and other PoC) who mask up and white people standing around coughing on each other. The degree to which different misinformation (about covid, about race, about reality) spreads along the same channels is creating a society of ignorant monsters.
@CodexArcanum @luckytran just curious, do you see any difference between tourists vs locals?

@luckytran I don't boost the avian droppings container on here as a rule, but you're the exception.

Black flags with red swastikas in Ottawa, almost a year ago...it was always the Nazis.

It was always the Nazis. All the way down. Including their Aktion T4 eugenics program they're running, to "make the economy come ROARING back" right now.

@luckytran Here's the Nitter link if you don't want to give the avian droppings container any traffic:

@luckytran I wonder if American exceptionalism has a role with downplaying the pandemic and the fierce opposition by some to public health measures such as vaccines and mask mandates. Certainly pathological individualism, which can’t envision members of civil society working together to contain a deadly pandemic, is partly responsible for the US having by far the highest COVID deaths rates of developed nations.
