Are Sesame Street characters canonically “Muppets?” I know from a technical / construction level they are, but I say no! I think they’re a different thing! The vibes are too different!

I’ve been asking my friends this question and it’s wild how varied and intense the responses are.

@jasonbraatz I vote no. Yeah, Jim Henson may have considered them #Muppets, but I think in this case people's experience with them matters more. The Muppets are a comedy troupe of puppets that had a eponymous show and several great movies -- Sesame Street features some puppets in brief skits with educational content. As you say, technically similar, but I say experientially different.
