Since (e: I am told that) Fandom apparently intends to remove text walkthroughs from GameFAQs (which Fandom now owns), a tip of the hat to Reddit user prograc, who scraped all of GameFAQs up through March 23, 2020; the full archive is available here: https://archive.org/details/Gamespot_Gamefaqs_TXTs

Internet Archive
@noelle they intend to fucking what
@aeonofdiscord I know only what I've been told, I'm afraid.
@aeonofdiscord @noelle the slash and burn of the internet continues
@IrisKalmia @aeonofdiscord @noelle i don't see anything about this; the only results i see for fandom + gamefaqs are about the purchase back in october 2022
@hierarchon @aeonofdiscord @noelle I really don't think it's fearmongering when they've historically bought resources and gutted them as part of their integration. GameFAQs is just a long standing Brand with a good reputation to them, none of it's other assets matter
@IrisKalmia if you're going to say "company X is doing Y" then X needs to have actually said they're going to do it, rather than "well, they'll probably do it soon" imo
@hierarchon I'm of the opinion that if an organization is known to do something the pragmatic option is to assume they'll do so and attempt to prepare accordingly?
@IrisKalmia sure, but there's a difference between 'you should prepare for them to do X' and 'they are doing X'
@hierarchon There is, but one makes for more effective calls to mobilization
@IrisKalmia I don't think we should get in the habit of saying things that aren't true to motivate people to do things
@hierarchon Sadly it's a well documented and exploited tactic at this point

@IrisKalmia @hierarchon @aeonofdiscord @noelle do they gut the resources? I thought they just slapped ads all over the resources

fandom's entire business model is profiting off content other people wrote for free. I highly doubt they're axing the most valuable part of gameFAQs

@IrisKalmia @aeonofdiscord @noelle Why is everyone who buys a fucking website these days this guy:
@IrisKalmia @aeonofdiscord @noelle
We remain and thus the Internet does. An almost fully privatized Internet was a mistake. We can do better going forward.
@noelle the only usable walkthroughs on the entire internet!!!!
@noelle weak sauce, fandom.
@noelle would love a source for fandom removing text walkthroughs from gamefaqs, i'm not finding anything
@noelle fandom burn to the fucking ground challenge

@noelle wait what the shit

messing with gamefaqs feels strangely sacrilegious

@noelle Wait, what? Did they make an announcement about that or something?
@noelle ...what else does gamefaqs even offer???
@noelle Once for Gamesages, now for Gamesfaqs

@noelle Fandom: I'm just going to buy KFC and take chicken off the menu :D

Fandom needs to stop existing

@noelle Do you have a source for this? Fandom sucks sure but I've literally seen no news that they plan to delete text walkthroughs
@noelle I'm sorry, where was this said?
@Foxhack @noelle Yeah, seconded. I’ve seen people reacting to this but I haven’t been able to find any announcement. Is there more info anywhere?
@noelle That's some sad news that GameFAQS is removing their walkthroughs. Their walkthroughs, with their special thanks sections and ASCII-art maps of levels, were a big part of my gaming life in the 2000's.
@noelle im not surprised Fandom is pulling this shit. Glad that a huge chunk of old gaming guide internet got archived at least
@noelle I wonder if the regular wayback machine snapshots would have grabbed everything. I did a spot check and found some but I don't know anything about how that snapshotting system works. Presumably, if it's got everything that'd be easier to navigate than a flat text file.
@noelle I... just hope you're terribly wrong, but that's probably foolish. Can't believe it! I'm just at loss of words, ugh. It will be an end of an era for some when/if this happens. I'm grabbing the archive for good measure...
@noelle best to back that up elsewhere too, because archive.org will pull stuff if it thinks the original site is still up (whether or not content has changed). Saw the same thing on a couple gaming bulletin boards back in the day: we scrambled to get snapshots of everything on archive.org, then a week later they were all gone again.
@noelle That'd just be cultural vandalism
@noelle @[email protected] the fuck else do people go to gameFAQs for?
@noelle what is even the point of gamefaqs without text walkthroughs

@noelle
GameFaqs without the text walkthroughs is not GameFaqs.

... and we would be losing a TON of very useful info. I use text walkthroughs all the time. Text isn't old-fashioned, it's practical.

@noelle Money really does ruin everything good

@noelle This is literally the worst possible thing that #wikia could have done with that site. Yes I know they're Fandom now, I don't care.

My first experience with Wikia was about a decade ago. I heard about #Telefang and the translation patch. I tried reverse-engineering the title screen, since it wasn't translated yet... only to realize that I had an old patch because everyone moved off Wikia a year ago

RacieB had tried to warn people, but Wikia actually de-op'd her and locked the main page

@noelle Sounds like Wikia pulling another Wikia

(No, I will never call them Fandom, that name just feels like another jerk move)

@noelle Well crap, didn't know those were going away.
@noelle Why would they do that?!!! (Thanks for the link)

@noelle
Unfortunately, that isn't a full archive.

They couldn't figure out how to backup the HTML walkthroughs. It only contains the text-file walkthroughs. But that's still pretty significant.

@noelle text faqs on gamefaqs were literally one of the last good things on the internet what the fuck

@chrisisgr8 @noelle We are not allowed to have nice things. We have to hide them to keep people from destroying them.

That said, I'm permaseeding the torrent and I'd be happy to put a copy of the archive up for anyone who needs it.

@noelle And remember folks: if you want to keep this stuff around, make sure you keep an archive around yourself! Archive.org may not be around forever.
