We really do forget how much damage Trump did to democracy abroad because he did so much damage at home. But for four years, the message that strongmen and their supporters got from the United States was strength is all that matters and you can't lose if you refuse to accept it.
And this all comes two years after our own insurrection, just days after the insurrectionists—who remain utterly unrepentant—have taken control of the House and intend to give their ranks of conspiracy theorists and white supremacists plum committee positions.
And the links between the Brazilian insurrection and our own are not at all tenuous https://newrepublic.com/article/163301/steve-bannon-brazil-maga-battleground-bolsonaro

@RobertMaguire Cautionary tales don't translate very well, apparently.

@RobertMaguire The window to do something meaningful was very narrow -- the first few months of 2021.

But Biden and Dems weren't willing to risk a showdown.

Now it's too late.

@RobertMaguire it was a second coup here in the US. And I rather think the entire thing was staged with McCarthy's help to happen on 1/6. I wish Dems had colluded with the few remaining patriotic Republicans to shut the whole shit show down. Either by removing quorum or even better finding a completely different candidate to elect. That would have been the best result.
