After spending my Christmas money on some much needed household items I have some left for me. I’ve been after Lands of Galzyr from Snowdale Design for a while so I bought it!

Lands of Galzyr is an adventure board game where players explore the open, story rich Galzyr as cunning and ambitious adventurers.

Lands of Galzyr arrived yesterday! 🥳 I’ve read the rules and will play solo tomorrow then Sunday I’ll introduce it to other players. I’m very excited.

I've played my first solo game of LoG. Firstly, it's very easy to set up and put away. That alone means it'll be more likely to get played.

The game itself is utterly charming. I played the initial quest, which was great fun, but knowing I could play any other available scene or just go where I wanted felt really good. I did take a couple of breaks from the quest and just played some small, fun scenes. I now know why the reviews are so good.

@howrandom this sounds really interesting, and I like the idea of it being quick to set up and tear down. What sort of room does it take up on the table? And how long did it take you to play through?

@emmahunneyball For 1 or 2 players it fits on my small 135cm x 80cm kitchen table. For 3 or 4 I'd need the extension I built for it.

It took me 1.5 hours but I was re-reading some of the rules, taking my time so I didn't make a mistake and I'm a slowish reader. I could easily get that down to 1 hour after a couple more games.

It's definitely a case of just do exactly what the rulebook or card says. I wasted a bit of time second guessing the rules. It's really easy and straight forward to play.

@howrandom that sounds ideal. I love Sleeping Gods, but its immense size on the table and long playing time means it won’t make it to the table regularly. LoG seems like a game that would fit more neatly around the demands of family life.

@emmahunneyball I think it would be perfect for that.

There's no big overarching story. It feels like living in a world and taking part in the small stories that happen every day but with a world that changes slightly to reflect what you've done. I'm really looking forward to playing 2 player tomorrow.

I do really like the look of the Ryan Laukat games too though. They do seem like a bigger investment though.

@howrandom that definitely seems like I would enjoy it, and play regularly. Like I say, I love Sleeping Gods. It’s beautiful, epic, the story is good, the open-world feel is wonderful and it’s totally engrossing. It just definitely needs a bigger time investment.

@emmahunneyball I haven't played Sleeping Gods but it sounds like it's a bigger, more epic game. LoG is more the game you dip in and out of but that really works for me.

Once you start playing Sleeping Gods solo are you then stuck with only playing solo like some of the campaign games or can other players join and leave?

@howrandom other players can join and leave. I started playing solo and then my eldest saw I was not doing very well. He criticised my “poor leadership” and decided to come into the game for a bit to show me how it should be done. Then he left later on to go and do something else. Easy to bring people in and out of the game. I’ve heard people saying solo is overwhelming because you control all 9 characters but I didn’t see it that way. It was easier than double-handing Spirit Island solo.
@emmahunneyball I’m really interested in Sleeping Gods now! 🤣 It definitely sounds like it’s much bigger than LoG. I don’t think I have the time for that. LoG will come out 3 or 4 times a month solo (probably more initially), probably monthly for 2 player and hopefully a couple of times a year for 4 player.
