When I see someone whose writing (or tweets) I always liked join @Mastodon but they only follow a few people I worry they won’t get what’s so great here. You need to follow a lot of people to get a really deep and interesting feed. I hope they learn that quickly. I hope they stay and help this place thrive. #joinmastodon #twittermigration
@wfdobie @Mastodon My personal opinion, you need to follow at least 500 people to fully get the experience, but more is better.
@RickiTarr @wfdobie @Mastodon I don’t understand all of the people liking and boosting posts but not following. How do they think this works?
@RickiTarr @wfdobie @Mastodon I follow pretty much everyone I interact with if they seem the least bit engaged. I can always unfollow later if that turned out to be a mistake, but it rarely is.
@fields @wfdobie @Mastodon That's what I've been doing too, and so far it's worked out pretty well.
@RickiTarr @wfdobie @Mastodon I think it’s not made clear to people that one of the primary responsibilities they have, but also one of the most empowering, is to curate their feed. This is true of other social networks too, but less urgently necessary because most of them will push stuff at you if you don’t. Now I’m thinking I need to add an explicit section on this to my intro guide.
@fields @wfdobie @Mastodon Mastodon is so easily personalized, and it's great, although I get serious FOMO, so I just want everything.
A brief introduction to Mastodon - Adam Fields - Medium

This is adapted from a presentation I gave to a few people, and my main takeaway from that is that there are some confusing differences between how Twitter works and how Mastodon works. This is my…

I imagine some people are similar to me where I don’t even realize I’m not already following the person because I’m just going through the timeline and favoriting what I like and boosting what I really like.

Constructive feedback to Mastodon and associated apps would be to add some sort of indicator near the name/profile photo on a toot within a timeline that shows if you follow them (similar to the icons that are displayed when you go into the mastodon web settings and actually look at your follower/following list and can see if you follow them, they follow you, and if it’s mutual).

Maybe even a button to follow/unfollow from the post within the timeline?

@Alice @fields @wfdobie @Mastodon HARD AGREE, I've thought I was following several people, only to have them follow me and realize I wasn't already following.
@RickiTarr @Alice @wfdobie @Mastodon hey @ivory - this is a great suggestion and would be helpful ^^
@fields @RickiTarr @Alice @wfdobie @Mastodon @ivory Agreed on the concept! I would love to see something implemented as an indicator. Using a real world metric, I thought I was following Ricki several days before I did.
@Alice @fields @RickiTarr @wfdobie @Mastodon love this suggestion.
@JPEGuin is this something you could add to #mammoth ?

@fields @RickiTarr @wfdobie @Mastodon

That is an awesome way to look at things!

Engagement here on Mastodon by and large seems to be warm and genuine, something which is beyond refreshing.

(This is a new account specifically for my photography. I do have a personal account as well)

@fields @RickiTarr @wfdobie @Mastodon Yes, I endorse this philosophy, and follow you.
