What you see on this photo is not from the Empire Strikes Back.

No, it is German police protecting a coal mine excavator in #Lützerath - a village planned to be demolished by the energy company RWE to extract coal that is not even needed for the energy security of Germany.

@TatianaIlyina
And the expansion of coal mining was authorized by a federal government made up mostly of Social Democrats and Greens, no less!
@TatianaIlyina @cardamomicecream
Yes, this is one of the saddest aspects indeed.
@TatianaIlyina @mariusmichusch I am always amazed at fossil fuel infrastructure. Imagine what we could achieve if we put those resources and that creativity toward better ends. There is virtually no limit to what humanity can accomplish when we try. The only problem is that we have the wrong goals in mind.
@keke @TatianaIlyina @mariusmichusch I agree with you but you are also the most handsome human I ever saw. Goddamn.
@TatianaIlyina @mariusmichusch
It's not like the Germans can't engineer safe nuclear power plants.

@TatianaIlyina ...to make it possible to extract even more lignite, an awful brown coal derived from peat that is recognized globally as the most health-harming of the coals and a massive contributor to smog, acid rain, and particulate generation.

...for Political reasons.

@TatianaIlyina @mariusmichusch For everyone in the area: there will be a protest walk through the village this Sunday! Maybe the last chance to see it...

That looks like something out of a Foss art book
@TatianaIlyina @mariusmichusch 😳
the first association is kind of accurate:
"The Empire Strikes Back."
@TatianaIlyina For coal? Seriously? What is this, the 1800's?
@PointlessSpike It's not even ‘proper’ coal but just lignite, which is more like dirt that burns (somewhat). It's completely ridiculous.
@TatianaIlyina @mariusmichusch Isn't the Russian invasion of Ukraine putting Germany in a terrible energy crisis? How do we square their current energy shortfalls with "not even needed for the energy security of Germany."? https://tradingeconomics.com/germany/electricity-price
Germany Electricity Price - 2023 Data - 2018-2022 Historical - 2024 Forecast - Quote

Electricity prices in Germany hovered around €110/MWh, falling significantly from last year's peaks, helped by lower prices on the commodity markets and an expected decline in consumption due to the warmer weather. Government energy price brakes have also provided significant relief. Germany's government has announced support for electricity, gas, and heating prices for private households and companies in 2023, with the new measures taking effect at the beginning of the year. Meanwhile, a report from the comparison portal Verivox showed energy costs for private households dropped in the first quarter of 2023 for the first time in two years, with electricity and fuel decreasing by an average of 18%. Electricity prices in Europe's largest economy hit an all-time high of €700/MWh last August as the region met the worst energy crisis in decades and concerns about Russian gas supplies mounted. Historically, the Germany Electricity Price reached an all time high of 699.44 in August of 2022. This page includes a chart with historical data for Germany Electricity Price.

@TatianaIlyina @mariusmichusch Just want to point out that the issue here lies with politics not with the German police.
@TatianaIlyina @mariusmichusch Germany really needs to reactivate all of its nuclear plants so Poland can shut down all their coal plants which would be burning this coal.
@TatianaIlyina @mariusmichusch @aral Horrific. Distopian. Thank you for highlighting what is happening.
@TatianaIlyina @mariusmichusch best thing climate activists can do now: make this activity really really expensive for #RWE ! This picture alone must be a brand damage worse XX MIO € (unfortunately it only works in case RWE cares for brand reputation, not sure on this)
@TatianaIlyina @mariusmichusch
I will never understand why Germany closed functioning nuclear plants in order to dig up and burn the dirtiest brown coal 😕
@billheywood
I will never understand why Germany closed functioning nuclear plants in order to dig up and burn the dirtiest brown coal 😕
Because of green party morons.

@kostikov
They really are

They'd literally rather destroy old forests to dig up the dirtiest coal, than keep some pre existing nuclear power plants going

It's the most un-Green position possible

@TatianaIlyina @mariusmichusch here another pic unveiling the dystopia-level of what currently happens in #Lützerath. #Lützibleibt

@TatianaIlyina

Actually, coal is very much needed for the energy security of Germany thanks to Energiewende^1 - in 2021 it was the largest single source of electricity (they haven’t published 2022, but likely the same).

@mariusmichusch

Ideological origins of "Energiewende"

Germany's one time famous #Energiewende (energy transition) program has been blamed with gradually pushing the country into the hands of ...

Protestors played also fitting music:

@TatianaIlyina  Of course  the photo shows #Harkonnen troopers protecting a #spice harvester on #Arrakis also known as #Dune der #Wüstenplanet. 😬

Note that the whole galaxy was dependent on the spice melange and many wars were fought over its control.
Like the Harkonnens which cared most for their profits and little for human life.
In the end the #Fremen drove the Harkonnens off and took control over their #planet.

@TatianaIlyina they're just flattening and lowering all of Germany by a few metres, aren't they?
@TatianaIlyina @mariusmichusch this looks like a scene straight out of #Fallout76.
#F76

@TatianaIlyina @mariusmichusch OK, if we take that Germany lacks the energy-security need for the coal at face value (and I personally agree) then what *is* it for?

Saying Germany doesn't need it, but not explaining what the drivers are, and who actually benefits on the other side is an important part of changing the narrative from just confirmation bias on either side of the line. RWE by itself is one actor; whats the bigger system at work?

@TatianaIlyina @mariusmichusch
Given the fact coal leads to more radioactive waste than nuclear energy (with the only difference that coal will put it in our air while waste from nuclear reactors gets collected and disposed of) this is horrifying.

@mariusmichusch @TatianaIlyina

Andor wasn’t about space. It was about us.

@TatianaIlyina @mariusmichusch Never forget that the job of cops has always been to protect the rich and their property first, BEFORE THE LIVES OF OTHERS !

@TatianaIlyina @mariusmichusch coal burning should be terminated imho. But even if we do I also think we can't reduce co2 fast enough to stop harmful impact of climate change.
Therefore I wrote a blog on how we can safely start research on stratospheric aerosol injection.
