#feditips #fediverse How important is the local timeline for participating in conversations, being discovered as a voice on the topic of focus for the instance, etc?
@neighbor probably relational to the number of users on an instance, as well as its "reach" and purpose... i.e. in a server like this one, you'd be less likely to find a random post about a topic in the local feed (and in your language, at that) than on a server with less users, but a more focused "theme"
@mrpieceofwork I’m a designer, and would like to focus mostly on those convos, so I’m considering moving to .design—just not sure of the implications…
@neighbor it's a little more "work" and a bit redundant, but you can also create an acct on other servers (to find people there), then follow those accts but from this acct. ofc, hashtags are supposed to be a workaround for that, but not everybody uses them
@mrpieceofwork do you have a link on how to do that?
@neighbor no, and I just thought of 2 more things...
1st is you still need to find these instances, which is problematic...
but!
2... there IS a service that helps you "match up" with others, I just don't remember the name rn I will get back to you...

@neighbor https://instances.social
a wizard (also an option to view all) to find instances to puruse and/or to join them

https://communitywiki.org/trunk
has instructions on how to use it... for adding your acct to "follow lists" and also to mass follow others

Mastodon instances

@neighbor
as far as joining other instances, it's probably best to join only a few. Poke around on them, find people. When you open a profile, you can then copy the address, paste it into the search in mastodon.social, and from there you can then follow that remote acct. Like I said, it's a little work. Also, you can also just go through other's follow lists to find people. Good luck!
