As a media analyst, I cannot tell how much I think we as the press failed when it COVID, and we are continuing to do so. Here is from the front page of one of the largest newspapers in my country:

No, we should not just live with a worldwide pandemic. Just last year, about 630 people died in Europe from COVID, and another 540 died in North America ... and that was just one day.

To put this into perspective, In 2021, 19,800 people died in traffic fatalities ... but almost 435,000 died from COVID.

So, here we have a newspaper telling people that we should just let 20 times more people die from a pandemic, while at the same time demanding cars to be safer.

Seriously newspapers.

Also, we cannot just live with COVID. Many people are vulnerable, so "living with COVID" means permanently being at high risk. One of these people is my father. He has late-stage bone marrow cancer. After six months of treatment, he is now stabilized for a number of years, but if he gets COVID now, it might be game over.

He cannot just "live with COVID". So, what these editors-in-chiefs are saying is "survival of the fittest". That's the mentality you are proposing.

@baekdal ehh our government’s grand plan is to give out 4 free home tests, this is who people think are doing great leading on Covid, so I guess we decided we are going to live with it

@baekdal
I feel for your Dad. I work with compromised people. I've curtailed my personal life to avoid exposing anyone. Masking is a high priority. I never want to be the reason someone becomes ill or possibly dies. Being autoimmune myself makes me very cautious.
I surmise that there is way too many who are very selfish and don't care about others. Even their loved ones.

Wishing your Dad continued stable health.

@Angeleyez407 Thank you. He will survive for a few more years, but he is too late-stage for a cure. It's all about 'life-extending' for him

@baekdal
I hear you, and I am so sorry for the ignorance that abounds.

My husband is a cancer survivor. We are vaxxed and boosted. Covid got me last year and I lost most of my hearing. After surgery and hearing aids, I do okay. I consider myself very lucky.

@PeggyJoan Thank you. And sorry to hear about your hearing. And yes, this is serious. So many suffer, and it's incredible so many newspaper editors don't see that.
@baekdal
Yes! In Southern IL, our local paper refused to provide Covid numbers for fear of losing subscriptions. My town is abundant with anti-vaxxers.
A beloved teacher who refused all precautions died of Covid. She suffered in intensive care for two months. Her death did not compel anyone to consider receiving the vaccine.
@PeggyJoan What?!?! ... that's insane.
@baekdal
Oh, I could go on. I went out today and was the only one wearing a mask, including at the ophthalmologist's.
@PeggyJoan Here in Denmark, not even the doctors or nurses are wearing mask when my father goes to see them.
@baekdal and getting it makes one vulnerable.
@baekdal Or “protecting the most vulnerable”. — code for perpetual house arrest for those at risk.
