Religiously, Congress doesnโ€™t reflect America.
Even though nearly three in 10 claim no religious affiliation โ€” a rate that is steadily rising โ€” only two of the 534 members of Congress publicly identify as such.
Nearly 88% in Congress identify as Christian, compared with only 63% of U.S. adults. 57% of congresspersons identify as Protestant and 28% as Catholic, both higher than national rates. 6% of Congress identifies as Jewish, compared with 2% overall.

Survey: Religiously, Congress doesn't reflect America

Religiously speaking, the incoming 118th Congress looks like America โ€” that is, the America of decades past, rather than today. Congress is far more Christian, and religious overall, than today's general population.

@AtheistAdvocate I wonder how many donโ€™t actually believe but fear losing votes if they come out as nonbelievers

@JaniceSelbie @AtheistAdvocate I think this is the key. Ironic that religious people are in-fact voting for non-religious candidates. Many of them know it too, but rationalize it.

An obvious example is a certain former president that comes to mind.

@JaniceSelbie i think this is the case. and has been since the beginning probably. it's just not considered super electable to be non religious. specifically non-christian in most areas.

also one can be culturally christian. and most of them would be and may identify that way even if they don't practice.
