A high percentage of @neilhimself's posts on the other place are quote posts. Can any legitimate criticisms of those be made? One reason he may not post as often on Mastodon as I'd like is because this method isn't allowed here. Here's one example of him using it to expose racism against himself on the other place. Had he been unable to quote post he couldn't provide evidence, so I couldn't complain to Elon Musk. Musk has had days to punish this antisemite but has yet to do anything. #QuotePosts
@TomDelargy In that other place, however, I often see advice to screencap abusive posts rather than quote-post them, in order to avoid boosting them with consequences for the algorithms. Of course, it is a lot more work!
It's the positive quote posts I miss - I have a friend who loves quoting with an approving comment at the top.
@HarrietMonkhouse Maybe you didn't know this. But because Neil Gaiman quote posted that tweet he got hundreds of retweets and many of us made official complaints. Elon Musk's stooges then had no option but to lock the account, telling him to delete his tweet as it's hate speech. The longer it takes him to delete it the more of a PR disaster this is for birdsite's chief executive. The UN, EU, advertisers, journalists have more incentive to impose sanctions. #QuotePosts worked in this case.
@TomDelargy Would that not have been achievable with a screencap? It would still have been possible for the stooges to check that the tweet was genuine. Also, that may be easier to pull off if you've got three million followers who will be indignant on your behalf!
@HarrietMonkhouse I think the way @neilhimself did it was exactly right. All I needed was to click the quoted tweet, take my own screen capture, and then make an official complaint. The account got locked because many others did what I did. If Neil did it another way the chances are the racist would delete the evidence before Elon Musk's goons had to lock the account. This is a PR disaster until the racist deletes his tweet. This is a massive gain for Musk's critics. #QuotePosts
