Iceland is a beautiful place to visit. I went in Oct 2016 and did some bus tours out of Reykjavik. They were good for a whirlwind tour, but very rushed - I recommend renting a car and driving around the island. Here's a shot taken out of the bus window of the town of Vik on the southern shore.

@jrtwynam Fabulous photo John, lovely colour.
The church looks like it’s out of a movie.
@ianjago Thanks! I was surprised at how well this one turned out, since it was taken very quickly as the bus was driving into town. Fun fact - if you visit the black sand beach Reynisfjara just outside of the town and look south out to the ocean, there's not a single mass of land between you and Antarctica. The western edge of Africa comes close, but not quite.
@jrtwynam I agree totally that Iceland is beautiful. I was there for a week once in December and had a fantastic time. The sky in your photo is spectacular. Beautiful photograph.

@ConanTheActuarian Nice! Was there a lot of snow there in December? I chose October when I went because I had read that the northern lights are best from Oct-Mar, and Oct had a better chance of good weather.

P.S. I got a good chuckle out of your handle.

@jrtwynam There was some. Not mountains of it. We did have a snow storm the day after we arrived that stopped a trip we planned to see a volcano. Otherwise it was mostly just very cold.

Glad you like the handle. It is an old joke from Fantasy & Science Fiction Magazine: You know you are in an alternative reality when you discover that your insurance agent is Conan the Actuarian.

@jrtwynam spectacular shot especially considering the circumstances. Sis has been to Iceland too, loved it.
@jrtwynam That is a STUNNING picture, thank you for posting! And thank you for adding alt-text
@jrtwynam I was on a 12 day organised tour last summer and yes, all very rushed so I was obliged to take photos via the minibus windows with mostly poor results. I wouldn't be confident enough to drive myself though.
@Judeet88 I know what you mean - I wasn't confident enough to drive myself when I booked the trip, which is why I booked the bus tours. But after being there, I think it wouldn't be too bad outside of Reykjavik, assuming there's no ice or snow.
@Judeet88 Maybe there are other bus tours that aren't as rushed. E.g. one of the tours I did stopped at Thingvellir National Park... for a grand total of about 20 minutes. That's not enough time to do any sort of exploring.
@jrtwynam fabulous! We’re going in June but on a cruise so the ability to rent a car and cut loose is limited. Still very much looking forward to this trip.
@jrtwynam Any trees there? Always get the feeling there aren't.
@12thRITS I'm trying to think back, but I really don't remember.

@jrtwynam

Wow that’s pretty as a picture!

@jrtwynam you are spot on. Car is the way to go.
@nyc2msp That's a great photo! He seems like a friendly guy. :)
