Hey #BlackMastodon Reposting this here because I deleted all my old tweets, so my various crypto warnings are all gone:

Get out of Tether. Now. As with NFTs, DAOs, and all of the other Black wealth decimation crypto fails I tried to warn you about, I am not debating this with y'all. Get out of Tether, or don't.

Don't let Alt-Right tech bros sell you crypto pipe dreams about a "separate but equal" financial system with no consumer protections. Not in 2023. These people do not care about you.

@mekkaokereke I've long said Bitcoin is a scam.

I should have been saying cryptocurrency is a scam.

@ricardoharvin @mekkaokereke Never too late to change things around. New phrase for 2023, never invest in cryptocurrency.

@mekkaokereke The tragic thing is, the potential *is* there - there exist viable technologies for slipping free of the traditional banks’ centralization of Financial Power.

What does not exist, at present, is a successful rollout of those technologies.

Why? Because rolling out (i.e. marketing) a new technology costs money, and for-profit businesses aren’t constitutionally capable of decentralizing their own power away.

The banks who *could* finance such an operation *want* it to fail.

@cmdrmoto @mekkaokereke private banks aren’t great, but that centralized banking system comes with great consumer protections that technology cannot provide. Currency is largely a social problem; throwing tech at it doesn’t really improve it (except for things like fast, cheap digital transactions, which already exist)

@chucker @mekkaokereke Hard currency is hard custody. You can’t Ctrl-Z in real life.

If I have a pile of gold, and I hand it to a scam artist, on their word that they’ll give me twice as much back tomorrow?

I don’t get my gold back.

Banks make it seem like custody doesn’t matter. They benefit from the illusion.

Disillusion: you’re trusting a whole *team* of jokers - in the form of the bank, the government, the Fed, the Market - with your future wealth.

Custody matters.

@mekkaokereke Great advice for anyone, actually; but it is important to note that "Tech Bro" and "Alt-Right" have a strong positive correlation; trust Tech Bro's like you would slave owners or colonizers.
@mekkaokereke A correction after I re-read my post, that I think I need to "publish" not just silently change:
"it is important to note" should have been
"it is important, as you note,"
You said it first, I was just trying to make it clear to other white folk like me.
@mekkaokereke why not get out of everything crypto altogether? It's easier that way

@mekkaokereke

the people shilling for it on the premise that it being a 'new frontier' is somehow a benefit for minorities generally is appalling.

A seniorage play can only work for a few people, and anyone who bought in since 2020 is just giving those people an exit strategy.
