The thing about the Speaker fight is that we're witnessing a fight between a rogue group of #Republicans who don't want to bother with the pretense of governing at all against the GOP majority that wants to maintain that pretense but also has no real interest in governance.

The GOP "normies" have a real interest in greasing their wealthy and/or corporate donors. That requires at least some minimal effort at actual legislating.

The GOP crazies just want to see the world burn.

Beau of the Fifth Column has a superb case in point. You know how one of the things McCarthy has negotiated with his adversaries is that he's promising to dismantle the Office of Congressional Ethics? (Because, you know, Gaetz, Gosar et al.)

Well, the thing to keep eyes on is _how that tradeoff hasn't lost him any votes with the rest!_

It should have been a dealbreaker, but it isn't. That's how we know they're only making the appearance.
