Twitter is hilarious today. #thegrinding

@zerogeewhiz the other place has installed Tesla Autodrive.

It is going as well as expected.

@RealNickHodge as a colleague said about full self-driving, it works about as well as he does 12 tins into a slab

@zerogeewhiz I've been driving longer than I've written software ... and know that I will *never* trust a 100% computer driven vehicle.

Autopilot in commercial planes has *two* observers.

And I would think the cognitive load of monitoring a self-driving system *and* the road conditions is greater than just driving yourself.

I just don't get it

@RealNickHodge @zerogeewhiz Spot on. We are a LONG way off letting a car drive itself safely.
@molk @RealNickHodge which is a shame because it would revolutionise the lives of people with a disability and the elderly but would also cause a whole heap of other problems, so I'm on the fence
@zerogeewhiz @RealNickHodge It will be amazing when we get there. WHEN we get there.
@molk @RealNickHodge decades away imo
@zerogeewhiz @RealNickHodge While we are at it, where is my flying car?!
@molk @zerogeewhiz considering how "well" people drive in 2D adding another dimension is just going to make things worse.
@RealNickHodge @zerogeewhiz My experience with Subaru’s lane guidance system does not bode well for self-driving cars. It steered me out of a lane three times in the first few months I had the car. One time was a partially snow-covered road, another was a tricky curve, so I’ll forgive those. Third time was a freeway with clear lane markings in good weather. Oh, each time it berated ME to keep my hands on the wheel (my hands were on the wheel the whole time).
@johncarneyau @RealNickHodge Forester? Few years old?
@zerogeewhiz @RealNickHodge Outback 2022, Limited trim.
@johncarneyau @RealNickHodge oh it still sucks? Wow.
@zerogeewhiz @RealNickHodge Yeah. Like I say, the adaptive cruise control is useable, but should be a lot better IMO. The lane guidance is broken. Worse, the UX is awful. It beeps loudly at you when it loses the lane markers and you can’t turn the alert off. Like, I don’t fucking need that distraction when it also alerts you via the dash AND the HUD lights.
@RealNickHodge @zerogeewhiz Obviously I don’t use its lane guidance anymore. Its adaptive cruise control is better, but it also demonstrates the limits of the current state of the art. It “loses” the lead vehicle way too easily on curves and I’d like it to have a much longer following distance. I understand why it can’t, but again, it does not bode well for full self-drive.
@johncarneyau @RealNickHodge we had a Forester for six months and when we got in we switched off EyeSight. Absolutely frantic.
