In some places in the U.S., it’s perfectly legal to come into a supermarket armed to the teeth. You’re not committing a crime until you actually start killing people.

This must sound completely absurd to people outside the U.S. Please know that it sounds the same to most of us within it.

A Heavily Armed Man Caused Panic at a Supermarket. But Did He Break the Law?

In states with permissive gun laws, police and prosecutors have limited tools at their disposal when a heavily armed individual sows fear or panic in public.

@Julie here in the south it wouldn’t surprise me to find a man browsing the lettuces with a shoulder mounted grenade launcher.
@jillrhudy @Julie
Probably just struggling with the polysemy of “slugs.” 🤷🏻‍♂️
@Julie @fheinderyckx it took me two days but I finally got this 🤣
@jillrhudy @Julie
Slow humour is what we need in this quick-paced crazy world.
@Julie I don't understand it either. The other one I don't understand is the idea that guns don't kill people, it is the person who pulls the trigger! No one would die if they didn't have access to the gun.

@Francisc @Julie the classic
"Ray guns don't vaporize Zorbonians, Zorbonians vaporize Zorbonians" bumper sticker provides perspective and humor

@Julie It is completely absurd.
@Julie It’s getting more and more difficult to want to stay here. Dream of moving but getting older so who knows?
@Julie The agreement here in Texas is that you stop everything and just walk out of any establishment that lets someone come in armed. Leave your cart full of groceries and make the staff put them all back. Leave your food on the plate without paying. Just calmly walk out, then write or call the manager later and explain that you decided your life was more important, and tell them you hope this shows them it’s a terrible business decison to allow weapons in the establishment. Spread the word.
@Julie Batshit crazy here in the US 😠 I’m a supporter of the 2nd amendment but not as currently interpreted. I stand for gun ownership responsibility & regulation. Don’t use them myself though.
@Julie Looking forward to the day when we can get serious gun control legislation passed in Congress which will withstand scrutiny by the rightwing-controlled SCOTUS.

@Julie U.S.'s civilian society is overarmed — for what & who???

120.5 firearms per 100 civilians (2017) does neither make sense nor sanity.

A nation at war with itself?

And it costs too many lives!

@Julie That’s possible b/c of the 2nd amendment tragically. I hope Publix is to the place where they want to go inside hard to the teeth.
@Julie @just_alex That is utterly nuts. Speaking as a frequent visitor to the USA as a traveller, I would be freaked out if I saw people carrying guns around in public spaces like that.
@Julie because it is completely insane....
@Julie Thanks for posting - absurd is an understatement - “batshit crazy” would be more apt. I have driven in the US and been mindful to avoid any sign of road rage since I guess at least a third of drivers are probably armed. “batshit crazy” is a lot less offensive than having an armed shopper in my supermarket. #batshitcrazy #2ndAmendment #GunsKillPeople
@Julie You are right that we don't get it. Scary. No one knows their intentions until sometimes it's to late.
@Julie @hannu_ikonen by “some places” we mean roughly 40 states.
@Julie
USA a dangerous place.
AUS has 'blacklisted' its travelers about countries with much less violence (to say nothing about COVID and high-cost med care)
@Julie It's utterly nuts, especially in the current climate. You see someone walk in the door with an AR-15, and what are you thinking? Is he there to buy a loaf of bread or "take out" everyone in the store? And what if someone with a more concealed weapon decides to take out the shooter first? It's just a long slide into madness.
