My cartoon for this week’s @[email protected]

"I was naive. I thought that the benefits of doing science would be self-evident. And I anticipated that our science—as people who look at the planet and see that it’s changing—would come under scrutiny and even attack because the implications are politically inconvenient. We’ve seen that before, and that’s what I expected. What I did not expect was that [the Trump administration] would go after pediatric cancer research first. That they would go after Parkinson’s research first. And they would go after vaccines, the greatest invention of humanity. And that has shocked me, the fact that science is under attack, not because its conclusions are necessarily politically inconvenient but because it is a way of telling the truth. That has been the most disorienting and frightening aspect of all of this."

Top climate scientist Kate Marvel just resigned from NASA. Here's why

Climate scientist Kate Marvel talked to Scientific American about her decision to leave NASA amid federal government turmoil and funding challenges

Trump has declared war on history itself, on the freedom of historians to help Americans to learn from our past. https://trib.al/xelJ3Tt
Unhappy Anniversary: One Year Since Trump’s Brutish Assault on History

It’s a year to the day since Trump’s executive order on American history. It’s just as idiotic and offensive now as it was then.

I'm pleased to report that I have successfully converted my 2015 iMac 27" that Apple has called obsolete a while ago into a walloping #Linux powerhouse running #Ubuntu. The process was much simpler and the result much more impressive than expected. That an obsolete Mac can be turned into such a cutting-edge Linux platform says a lot. Pending issues: no sound (except via BlueTooth) and keyboard annoyances (which were solved by bringing in a wired PC keyboard). My computer is born again!

The Coalition for Independent Technology Research has filed a lawsuit with the @knightcolumbia and @protectdemocracy challenging a US State Department policy to revoke or deny visas of non-citizen researchers because of their work studying the societal impacts of technology. (1/4)

Since May 2025, the US State Department has publicized a visa restriction policy that targets and threatens deportation toward people who study and report on online harms.

Yesterday, @knightcolumbia & @protctdemocracy filed a lawsuit challenging this censorship policy on behalf of @transparenttech, whose members have been harmed by this policy.

“At a time when AI is rapidly changing our lives and economy and people are already worried about their freedom and safety online, we need independent researchers more than ever. This policy is meant to censor researchers into silence and keep the public in the dark, and that’s exactly what it’s doing” -- Brandi Geurkink, ED of CITR.

“The prompt was simple: ‘Does the following relate at all to D.E.I.? Respond factually in less than 120 characters. Begin with ‘Yes’ or ‘No.’
