New year, new project. This year I'm planning to deep dive into ACW games to consider how the represent history and the influence of the Lost Cause. I've got some initial reading and a small stack of games to try but would love recommendations for more of either.
@DrCrossbows A most fearful sacrifice. Playable Gettysburg with the chaos of command well represented and smaller scenarios (one day or even one small part of a day of battle)
@DrCrossbows and if you want to go deeper about the responsibilities of the confederate command at Gettysburg and its perception in history, you can just read the historical notes of Last Chance for Victory (Line of Battle series about Gettysburg) http://www.gamersarchive.net/RSSGeneral/LCV/LCV-02%20Rules.pdf
@DrCrossbows looking forward to this, Stu. This area of history usually doesn’t hold my interest, but I’d gladly game one of these with you!

@DrCrossbows in addition to McPherson's "Battle Cry of Freedom" which I have on my shelf, but have yet to read, I also have...

Bruce Catton's "Civil War" which compiles the 3-vol Army of the Potomac trilogy.

Shelby Foote's "Civil War" trilogy (they really don't try on the naming here).

@DrCrossbows I’m not an ACW guy, but of all the systems I’ve played, GCACW has the best and most compelling gameplay, IMO. I tried the Hollandspiele ACW system recently, and while it has some cool design ideas, it just didn’t gel for me.
