An interesting aspect of Mastodon is how much it resembles the online community at eBay circa 1997. (I’m proud to say that eBay invented ‘Trust and Safety’, to make the trading platform a safe place.) eBay had open “boards” where folks came to drink their morning coffee and to talk with friends. It’s tricky to create the right vibe where the community reinforces good norms, but it is possible.
