Treated myself to a new calculator for Christmas. Look at the size of it. And yes, it comes with a free felt pen. Handy.
Let's open it up and take a look at the juicy innards.
Looks to be all there, including the felt pen, adaptor and program library. Considering this calculator is from 1977, that's good going.
There's a few odds and bobs as well, including a small pamphlet with READ THIS FIRST! on the front. I'll read that later.
These program libraries are incredible. Want to calculate planetary motion or the Spearman's rank correlation coefficient? I've got you covered.
The calculator itself is an absolute beauty. This thing is 45 years old and it looks brand new.
And this is where my testing ends. There was no way I was going to plug the adaptor in so I found a 9V battery and plugged that in. There was a strange hissing sound and a slightly pungent smell. Dodgy caps? Could be.
I think that's where I'll leave it for now! 80085 can wait.
I'll tell you what IS wild though. Platignum Penline felt pens were available in the 70s, in fact Platignum no longer exist.
This could indeed be the original pen and what's more, IT STILL WORKS!
@LordArse you know what doesn't need batteries? A slide rule.
@LordArse Fingers crossed it's an easy fix! 🤞
@LordArse Holy crap, that's beautiful.
@LordArse How about the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?
@LordArse so cool! Hope you can get it working again. Hissing and a pungent smell certainly seems like an electrolytic going to me, should be an easy fix, I would open it up soon though and clean that electrolyte out before it starts corroding things.
@dan @LordArse This other Dan concurs, check caps first
@LordArse ah. Fond memories of that calculator. I have mine boxed still but several keys snapped off and the circuit board eventually failed. I wrote several games for it including a version of space invaders!
