Seems like the salient thing about the Santos story is something no one is articulating out loud: in a normal situation, GOP would be happy to throw him overboard and eliminate the embarrassment but their razor-thin House majority forces them to defend every seat

Idk what McCarthy can really offer him at this point though considering how legally screwed he probably is

RT @pixelpusher220 - @mtsw it's more McCarthy's even thinner margin.  And with all that stuff hanging over Santos Kevin knows he can demand his vote

Maybe, but tbh the story seems like a huge embarrassment for the GOP that no one on their side is really willing to publicly defend

RT @neilasaurus - @mtsw nah they have completely lost all decency. It wouldn’t matter if hey had a large majority or were in the minority. The more corrupt and insane a person is the more they like him

@mtsw @neilasaurus they’ve just learned the tactic works. remember all those trump tweets they never saw?
@mtsw @neilasaurus the NY Post isn’t even bothering to defend him. They called him “liar elect” in a headline.

@mtsw @neilasaurus my strong suspicion is that everyone aside from McCarthy knows this is only going to get worse, so they’re cutting bait early. Why bother wasting some credibility when the outcome is predictable and the stakes are low personally?

McCarthy is stuck though, as you said.

@mtsw not telling him he won't be seated is a gift in and of itself.

Nothing long term sure, but McCarthy could simply end any chance of actually being seated right now.

That would of course take backbone which is sorta Kevin's problem

@mtsw it's more McCarthy's even thinner margin. And with all that stuff hanging over Santos Kevin knows he can demand his vote
@mtsw nah, it’s who they are now
@mtsw I think this begs the question. In a normal situation, half the GOP house caucus would be in jail or under a court enforced conservaorship.

@mtsw
I lack your confidence that in a post-Trump era they would toss even this guy.

One of the amusing things in this whole affair has been Santos's response to questions, demanding that he be assessed not on his lies about who he is, but on his promises about what he'll do in office. The thing is: every one of those is equally a lie! They're all nonsense based on absurd non-facts! But they're standard Republican lines - and unlike his employment history, they get absolutely no inspection.

@mtsw That's kind of like a runner that won a #race by only a few steps saying that he was **forced** to #cheat by doping so he could gain those steps.

Supporting #Santos isn't an #ethics breach now that the #GOP won the #House, he was an ethics breach from the beginning.

@mtsw I really don’t think this guy thought he would win. He figured running would give him a legitimate entry for his fake resume that he could then use to expand his grift.
@mtsw Counterpoint: this is the new normal for the GOP, and they love him for his grift.
