It's high time I started a #fanfic #recs thread, too! :D Most of these will be #WangXian from #TheUntamed #cql #mdzs, maybe I'll include YiZhan fics, too.

I'll start with this fic by Ariaste about @wangxian as ballroom dancers. Lwj is a dance teacher (juniors!), wwx became an outcast because of erotic dancing. The yearning & sexual tension in this #fic go through the roof. There's a misunderstanding, clever parallels to canon, events culminate at a dance competition.

One of my @wangxian comfort reads is "Three changes" by orange_crushed, a Cloud Recesses era AU (no war etc) with a lwj pov. The writing is so beautiful & sensual, you really experience lwj's emotional turmoil and attraction, and wwx is just like in cql, irresistible, kind and brilliant. There's only brief angst, mostly the two do this sweet, hesitating dance around e/o.

It's a fix-it starting at the cave with the divergence that wwx understands the name of the song 😍 They plus jc and jzx stay together, become a battle quartet and develop a 4-way soulbond, it's great. This is one of my absolute favorite #YiZhan #fanfic s: "The scent of happiness" (49k) by vesna (mrsronweasley). It's a famous Wang Yibo/ non-famous Xiao Zhan AU, she actually wrote Xiao Zhan as a baker before he said in an interview that that's his dream job if he left c-ent 🤩
The fic is very soft and hot and just perfect. Wyb falls for this baker with the brilliant smile who doesn't know wyb is an idol.

I have to rec this wonderful @wangxian #fanfic I read today:
"The sculptor" (28k) by Eleanor_Fenyx is a modern AU playing in the 70s where a deeply closeted lwj is in a "lavender marriage" with lesbian wq, and becomes the model for sculptor wwx.
The fic is very tender and sensual and treats its characters with so much respect. It's beautiful to see a vulnerable lwj loosen up slowly under wwx's gentleness.

Wwx is a volunteer after recovering from a severe illness, lwj is diagnosed with cancer. As you can guess there's a lot of hurt/comfort and it might be too raw for some, but it's a very soft fic with lots of A-Yuan cuteness and wwx kindness and the warmth of people taking care of each other.

Huaisang takes in a homeless wandering wwx and does everything in his considerable power to give his story a happy ending, including one for @wangxian . Wwx finally gets the home and appreciation for his brilliance & kindness he deserves, in Qinghe. And others get the disdain they deserve. I loved it.

Lwj mistakes wwx for the escort he booked for a dinner, to distract him from his grief. A beautiful story about a life-changing encounter, with a lwj who can communicate a bit better than in canon. "Fated" (3 works, 31k total) by LtLJ is a wonderfully unusual take on the arranged marriage between lwj and yllz, with a completely different, intriguing backstory. @wangxian are married against their will and find out that everything is not what it seems. Lwj is instantly in pining protectiveness mode 🤣😍 whereas wwx is torn between trust and expecting the worst. It's rather chapters of one fic than a series.

"Candy & conspiracies" (17k) by Reverie, where wwx is adopted by madam Jin and grows up to be jzx's gremlin best friend, along with Mianmian. In wonderful contrast to canon, madam Jin is happy to leave him wild and free because he uses his genius and social skills for good, in a sometimes terrifying way 🤣 Also, there's a speedrun of 3 romances. After traveling for months wwx returns, and there are no stupid misunderstandings, no self-denial or obliviousness, but so much love & simple intimacy & softness, my heart! The prose is marvelous, turns of phrase like jewels.

One of my favorite #WangXian post-canon getting together #fanfic :
In "This house of ill repute" (13.5k) by Jo Lasalle, WangXian find shelter in a cozy place, which wwx, but not lwj, realizes after a bit is a brothel. The fic navigates their reactions & feelings so well, wwx's gentle amusement & kindness, lwj's embarrassment & consternation, the vulnerability & maturity both show in dealing with the situation and each other. It's very soft and beautiful.

This fic has wonderful characterization, lots of feelings & engaging plot. Simply perfect.

"A ferry crossing, a shared pillow" (23.5k) by kakikaeru is a no war AU #TheUntamed #fanfic where Wen Yuan grew up with the Yiling Wen who are close friends with #WangXian. He is invited to CR as a guest disciple where he meets ljy.
The story is beautifully written, the two getting closer is so lovely. I adored their characterization and the happy domesticity of Wen Yuan's life with his family. A perfect fic.

"I don't want to debut" (56k) by countingcr0ws is a #WangXian idol competition AU with wwx as unwilling but too popular & capable candidate & lwj as instructor. Jyl, jc and jzx follow wwx with religious fervor, the jc pov has so much shade for jzx!

It's light on the romance but absolutely hilarious, I laughed so much, plus there's lots of wonderful Chinese idioms & youth language (footnotes!). Also it reads very authentic on c-ent, approved language, fan culture...

@lookitmychicken I had no idea whatsoever but it's a lot of fun. I was really impressed how well the author had the inspirational, conforming speak down, both of candidates and of hosts. That in itself was funny in an educational way.

"We all have a hunger" (23k) by KatAnni is a Cloud Recesses era getting together fic where things go wrong at a night hunt. Wwx is both vulnerable and a genius, lwj gradually realizes how kind and sincere he is. Plus lots of hurt/comfort.

"These things unseen" (34k) by bonyenne is a very soft #WangXian canon fix-it #fanfic where wwx wakes up after 3d from wq's needles with a fevered A-Yuan in his arms, and his priority becomes saving him. Changing pov with lwj who's searching for his zhiji. Enter xxc, sl, bssr and ly 🤩 Lots of comfort & care, also plenty of child acquisition :D The only angst is wwx's non-existent self-worth, and his new maternal figures know how to deal with that 😍

"Where the nightingales are singing..." (33k) by moominmammashandbag is a non-magical history AU #fanfic where #WangXian were in an early arranged marriage before wwx reportedly died in battle. Years later lwj oversees an exchange of prisoners of war. Not angsty!

Written in a wonderful dry humor voice, with (pseudonymous) famous romantic poet and hilariously petty lwj who doesn't let anyone forget their crimes against wwx.

"Down by the water" (60k) by astrolesbian is an incredibly beautiful #WangXian surfer AU #fanfic. I felt like my chest was open & my heart exposed the entire time. Perfect characterization, insecure, awkward lwj pov & sun-like, hot wwx, told via effective time jumps, angst is all in the past.

"A clan of ghosts" (31k) by @twigofwillow is a lovely fix-it AU #cql #fanfic told from Wen Qing's pov. It diverges when wwx and the Wens get a warning from lqy about a trap, leading to wwx's Burial Mounds family expanding in surprising ways. Beautifully told, great characterization and dialogue, and the found family feels are strong. I was especially happy to see wq adopt new family & friends. This really touched me.
