I am pausing the alt-text.org project. I am not able to maintain it alone, and costs are exceeding my ability to cover, even with the help I'm receiving.

The technology is there. The need is there. Right now, the resources are not. If someone is interested in taking over the project, please reach out.

Thank you, especially to those who have offered help along the way.

@hannah What kind of software stack does it need in a nutshell? Is it GPU bound? What kind of RAM use? Network? Is it a matter of hosting?

@d3cline It's fairly GCP-native in its current implementation, though the idea is certainly not bound there. It needs a NoSQL DB of some kind (ATM Firestore) as well as a vector DB (ATM Pinecone).

It's primarily CPU bound, though that's in a large part due to the implementation of its core image hashing algorithm being in need of optimization. I had plans to rewrite it in Rust (from Node) to hopefully shave cycles down.

Not much RAM usage, network is primarily inbound

@hannah Can you DM me about how much a month your hosting costs are and who you host with now? I own a hosting company and we are looking for non profits in this space to help. I have to bring it to the other co founders, cant promise and it might not even be the issue you are facing, but if I can help I will. Or email me [email protected]
@d3cline It's very appreciated, but one of the resources wanting right now is my own time and energy. Unfortunately that's not something a hosting change will help 😩
@hannah I understand. If you find anyone who wants to take on that role we are here to potentially help with the hosting. It might be able to keep going. Let me know if the situation changes.
@d3cline @hannah I'd love that cost DM too ;)
Is the code open somewhere?
@Addshore @hannah follow the link in op, GitHub link on that page,
@hannah What is the alt-text project?
@profoundlynerdy In short, a library for alt text, keyed by fuzzily-matched image
@hannah That's interesting. Did you make it for disability accessibility?

@hannah Thank you for putting the effort needed for this.

I also understand the feeling of despair / abandonment when you have to leave a project due to economic needs, so... hug

Let's hope someone else takes the baton for this.

@hannah Thank you for your work 💛
