@graciegato @mastodonmigration The people who run those firms seem to have more money than sense anyway. I mean, just take the open source software and start your own instance if you like Mastodon so much.

Sure, I don't see much of a revenue model doing that, but since when has that ever fazed Silicon Valley VCs?

The issue of offers to fund Mastodon is similar to the issue of funding private schools.

As a former board member on one, we didn't want govt funding and could never understand why anyone would even think that we wanted any such funding.

If we accepted public funding, we would cease to exist as a private school. It's like death. Why would we want to commit suicide?

It was better to struggle along, and maintain our identity - and most importantly, our independence.

@mastodonmigration it’s interesting how journalists writing about mastodon keep referring to it as a “site” or “app” when it’s not either of those things. Due to it’s decentralization, there is no singular site or app… at best it should be referred to as a service or a network.

@bmorgan83 @mastodonmigration That is also what is making some people so reluctant to join in. If you think of it as just another site, why would you move? That is why I think the next big step should be to make the entire fediverse so easy to navigate that even my granny could do it. And she's been dead a long time.

@mastodonmigration there will almost definitely be attempts to buy instances of sufficient size as a proxy. The future is going to be a very interesting time indeed. In a way it's going to resemble what happened with Linux I suspect, we're ultimate Direction falls under the benign dictator and his court, and the money man all have to eventually fall in line because they're not the ones calling the shots.
