The issue of offers to fund Mastodon is similar to the issue of funding private schools.

As a former board member on one, we didn't want govt funding and could never understand why anyone would even think that we wanted any such funding.

If we accepted public funding, we would cease to exist as a private school. It's like death. Why would we want to commit suicide?

It was better to struggle along, and maintain our identity - and most importantly, our independence.
