The true test of the YIMBY is being ok with them knocking down your favorite coffee shop in order to build a mixed use apartment building and I AM DOING MY BEST.
@hankgreen It depends on if that mixed use space has something useful to the community at the street level or if it has just another stupid overpriced Urban Outfitters.
@hankgreen ideally the coffee shop would at least get right of first refusal in the new commercial space.

@hankgreen
Oh geez. That's like trying to stay a prison abolitionist when talking about guys like SBF...

My condolences, but also props to your integrity.

@hankgreen couldn’t they add retail space in the mixed use building and include the coffee shop?
@hankgreen if there was only a way to have coffee delivered to your home (to make your own).
@arrobas @hankgreen This is the part where that new tumblr account which is totally not an author, would react with the 👀 emoji.
@hankgreen I mean does the mixed used building have a space suitable for a coffee shop?
@hankgreen You being good with YIMBY is how you show us you DFTBA.
@hankgreen you are doing better than I would, bestie... I'd be all salty about it. I hope you get a Dutch Brothers near you, they are amazing!! 💯
@hankgreen I am about to lose my lovely view of a re-wilded area that borders onto my back garden because they will build a nursery there, and that is fine.
@hankgreen There are so many vacant/derelict properties, at least where I live, that seems it should be quite a while before we need to demolish actual working local small businesses for development.

@hankgreen Dude, that's a tough one. It's all good if you have other good local options.

But if there's nothing else nearby, I'd have to stick with keeping the coffee shop...

@hankgreen can your fave cafe go on the main floor? More places to live are good. But more places to live in well-mixed neighbourhoods are even better.
@hankgreen I mean the obvious big question here - is the coffee shop returning or not? Sounds kind of like not.
@hankgreen 🤞hopefully it helps your new favourite coffee shop thrive from a larger local community to support it

@hankgreen

Are you going to build a coffee-shop space with the same rent or allow them to freehold the space? If so then yes. If you're just going to put in a Starbucks or some other large chain then no.

@hankgreen It can be painful but the benefit to the community will hopefully be worth it. We are going to lose some local favorites in my town as they expand the road for light rail, but hey we'll finally have some light rail! Alas we'll also loose some great spaces due to highway expansion but that's another fight. Anyhoo just wanted to share you aren't alone !

@hankgreen
The truest test of a yimby is when they learn what LRO software is and they don't care because the market isn't incentivised to provide housing affordably anyway. Digital price fixing merely accelerates our journey back to feudalism, rather than meaningfully changing the endpoint, which is something yimbys must embrace

Markets are tools, not solutions lol. Lmao

@hankgreen
*Basically give away housing post-ww2*
*Housing price rises faster than inflation for decades*
"housing is a good investment. Don't you want something to leave your kids?"
*Makes housing policy to protect investments*
"Housings too expensive!"
*Creates a predatory loan bubble*
"People need housing to live! Please stop"
*Activates LRO afterburners, extends 0% interest FREE MONEY to private equity for housing acquisition*
"Why would you charge so much for something we need to... Oh."
@hankgreen Ha! Joke's on you, my favorite coffee shop is on the bottom floor of a mixed use apartment building
@hankgreen mixed use apartment with coffee shop in the bottom is the way
@hankgreen
Coffee shop? Meh. Pizza joint? Fuggetaboutit.
@hankgreen HA! Amateurs! In #Seattle they knocked down a popular coffee shop to build a public monorail that they NEVER BUILT!
@hankgreen How can you tell until you see who the new merchants are?
@hankgreen ugh, that sucks. Developers love throwing out NIMBY allegations where all they want to do is develop “luxury” condos while providing no affordable units and providing no open spaces. Development is an inevitability but shitty development is not. #nimby

@hankgreen

Can the coffee shop relocate? All those new people would probably use it!

@hankgreen I have such an unbelievable hard-on for mixed development and will fight anyone on how suburbs are the most awful place to live period. I'm sorry for your loss, but thankful for your sacrifice.
@hankgreen Wow! That sucks! Coffee shops can be very special to the people who frequent them - I myself cherish a couple coffee shops close to me. Inexpensive, with sympathetic people, places to *just be*, pausing life for a couple of minutes
@hankgreen I guess the coffee shop could return to the same place, it's mixed use, after all...

@hankgreen but, maybe one of the mixed-uses will be an amazing science cafe, and then you can be SIMBY, too!

*Science In My Back Yard

@hankgreen Me too right now. Me too.
@hankgreen I'm genuinely sorry you're going through this. First world problem but I empathize
@hankgreen Hard to think of a valid excuse for not building the apartment block around the coffee shop. Much stranger things are done all the time. Ground floors are for retail, and bicycle storage.
