There's been a lot of talk about a recent rule change at aus.social, as they've banned police from their instance.

We'd like to say that we think they've made a good choice there and that it's always a great idea to prioritise the needs of the most vulnerable members of your community.

One of the strengths of the fedi is the ability to move to servers with policies that suit you best, but please become very familiar with our own code of conduct before deciding if The Blower is right for you.

@geton

Time for me to have a little break and work out what to do

The police are far from perfect and I agree parts of their role should be done, or at least attempted, in different ways

But any place that lumps everyone from a large group of people into the same bucket because of the actions of the few likely isn't the place for me

I have family members who are / have been in law enforcement, I love and respect them. Am I "bad" as well?

Noting cop haters killed 2 cops just weeks ago

@HardBeingGreen @geton
Yeah agree. Lumping people in a general group to hate on others is a red flag. As is the rationale used (protecting vulnerable people). That tripe wouldn't look out of place in right wing circles. It's also simply lazy. 'Let's just get rid of this group of people rather than make the effort in assessing by individual'. Pretty unsatisfactory and disappointing.

That being said, the aus.social instance can be one where certain people feel better. I am happy they have a place to call home.

@geton I'm confused. You know, police people are part of our community, and service is a good thing. There are surely police people across the left right spectrum. What about nurses? SES workers? Ambos? Censorship comes with problems too. Just wondering.
