#ARMYLearnsKorean I wanted to share some of my language learning tips from my professional life as a speech Language pathologist (therapist outside of the US).
I’m not an expert in second language development, but I am an expert in child development of language or how to help with language loss after brain injury 😁. So I had a bunch of thoughts to hopefully encourage

1. Children have a brain advantage in terms of development of language, but I think we can learn from how kids learn.

2. Kids are surrounded by native speakers of their language, so even if you can’t sit and study, listening to songs, K Variety, K dramas, trying to read posts on Weverse, we’re replicating immersion a bit.
3. Kids learn things they think are cool and get them things they need. So connecting our learning to something we love (BTS💜) and things that are meaningful to us will help us retain the information.

3. Kids make so many mistakes especially little little kids. We’re used to be pretty good at some things as adults so finding safe ways to make mistakes is something we can replicate too.
4. Kids get lots of feedback from their caregivers. We don’t have Korean parents to adopt us, but we can utilize technology like try to use the text to speech on a phone to see if it recognized your word. Try making a sentence and putting it into a translator app like Papago for feedback.

4 continued: R/Korean has a nice Discord with a channel where you can request feedback on a sentence. Use that when you want more advanced feedback. A good Language teacher or tutor would encourage creative attempts at getting your point across and then provide gentle feedback. So if you do have a tutor and you don’t feel like you can make mistakes, then find a new tutor.

5. Kids imitate everything!! So imitate the 대박, 화이팅, and 괜찮아요 etc as you watch BTS Run!!!
6. Consider reframing your early learning goals. Kids very early want to play, to get needs met, and make connections. How can you leverage your adult knowledge of language 1 with your basic knowledge of language 2 to play, to meet needs, and to make connections vs achieving a certain fluency level in a time frame.
