George Santos, the embattled representative-elect for New York’s 3rd Congressional District, has fessed up. Well, somewhat. After a New York Times exposé broke a week ago calling much of Santos’s background into question, including his claims of where he went to college, where he’s worked, and even whether he had a criminal background and was actually a fugitive from Brazil—allegations which Santos’s attorney claimed at the time were a “shotgun blast of attacks” aimed at “smearing his good name”—the 34-year old fabulist tried to close the story with a heartfelt

@jaykuo his history of lies is truly incredible. I'm sure that he as told 5 more lies than your average Republican and 10 more than your average Democrat.

It isn't shocking at all that someone like this could get elected. We have a political system that has legalized, protected bribery and a national press that does not challenge powerful people. We have system that encourages the most dishonest and most amoral people to run for the most powerful positions.

It is gross, but not surprising.
