Proposed: Congress would do far more to guarantee Trump does not become President again by mandating audits as President than by attempting to exclude him w/Insurrection referral.

@emptywheel True. And they could include SCotUs, too.

But with GOP taking House it's an idle dream.

@emptywheel I'm more worried about deterring the next Trump. This one seems to be spiraling downward already to incompetence.
@pooterheadpharm @emptywheel Entirely this! Make no mistake, the GOP may want to be done with Trump - putting aside whether they can successfully do that without courting ruin - but they have NO DESIRE to be done with Trumpism/authoritarian control.
@emptywheel He can never be president again for all the reasons. He really left no stone unturned on that front.
@rotn @emptywheel
I won't be surprised if he gets the nomination while sitting in a prison cell for trying to steal the last election. It's still possible. But I think the cashists are looking for a more stable face to give the masses and Desantis is probably it.
@RnDanger @emptywheel
Looking back it seems the big early favorite, on either side, is usually a distant memory by the time nominations roll around. They will commit some grave faux pas and be shamed out of the race (Trump somehow managed to avoid this _ I think he may have been the first).
@RnDanger @emptywheel
I think we don't know yet who the Republican nominee will be. Hopefully the upcoming proceedings will leave a bad enough taste in their mouths that they'll want to distance themselves officially from the assholery that they've normalized.
#Trump
@rotn @RnDanger @emptywheel I am personally hoping for a DeSantis Republican ticket and a pissed off, petty Donald Trump independent ticket to spite DeSantis.
@emptywheel if congress wants to stop Trump and those that support him—we should require complete transparency for the ones running for office and those funding the folks running for office.
@damnkimberlee @emptywheel and WH senior staff + Cabinet secretaries + Congress.
@emptywheel But weren’t they mandated? If he is the executive, he simply appoints an IRS commissioner who is his crony and the audits don’t happen.
@emptywheel Release his tax records. Then let the other GOPs beat him up as they climb over him to take power and the 2024 nomination for president.
@emptywheel They ARE mandated. The mandate was disregarded. No sense to have laws if they are only selectively enforced. One law for me, another for the rich thee.
@emptywheel Doing both would be good, too.
@emptywheel another requirement that would chase bad actors off would be passing a standard security clearance background check BEFORE declaring a candidacy.
@emptywheel
I hope they do both!!!
@emptywheel Congress excluding Trump from running for office is bad IMO. Let him split the GOP and keep democracy alive, if only for a few more years.
@emptywheel It's like Maggie Haberman wrote this tweet.
@emptywheel
They're out now and being audited so how would that stop him from becoming president again?
@emptywheel It bothers me that we are only now learning that the IRS didn't do the audits

@emptywheel
Agreed. When you get down to it, his main offense is financial crimes: the ones he’s already committed and the ones he wants to commit.

His willingness to commit crimes and sedition and treason are all motivated by this fixation imo.

@emptywheel audited by.... Someone the president can't fire?
@emptywheel Ahhh, but let’s do both!
@emptywheel I thought audits were already mandated??
@emptywheel Is there any real barrier to doing both?
@emptywheel As a matter of policy, I agree. But this presumes the law would be followed and the audits done. In fact, the IRS is supposed to mandate the returns of Presidents, but did not do so for Trump until 2019, when Congress began nosing around
