Can't stop thinking about this person who made the distinction on TikTok between old school social media for being in touch with your friends and making new ones, and "performative" social media where the point is to reach people you don't know.
I think some of the friction between OG mastodonians and the #twitterExodus is that the former were trying to recreate old school, but the latter are coming for performative and angry that it's not built for that
@Dubikan it is built for that, but they have to change the act. And that is hard.
@d3cline how do you mean?
@Dubikan ActivityPub is a communication protocol, and its great for business. It has better moderation tools, so a brand or influencer, or whoever (all the same thing) can't use that 'viral' dopamine hit crap, it has to be on a deeper level. But this is good for the brand and for the consumer. There is no AI to pay off here. So each broadcast has equal opportunity. Commerce is here, its just new commerce. Performance is here, its just new. Has to provide real value, not dopamine.
@d3cline not sure I agree. Commerce needs the ability to be "discovered" by somebody who's not looking for you (eg. ads), and mastodon, as currently designed, deliberately limits that. It's not built into ActivityPub, but it is into the way mastodon implements it. Consider just the use case of finding people talking about my product so I cam respond/boost. No search means I can't engage unless they directly engage me.

@d3cline ummm... Ok... So?
@Dubikan 🤣 discoverability is word of mouth. Word of mouth is just being a solid business person. Being helpful, providing more value to the community beyond a broadcasted tailored message. Beyond dopamine hits and instant gratification. The old models all used an AI system to trigger these things. Here what triggers the reward mechanism is a bit harder, but it is a bigger reward. The open nature of the protocol makes cost of iteration much cheaper.
@Dubikan another word for 'influencer' is 'brand ambassador' or 'advertiser', the whole concept was invented by guys like Mark Cuban. It was a cool model, its ran its course. And evolution will move them here or they will die in the SPAM bin. What you are calling an 'ad' is simply a way to iterate seed marketing. I am doing that now, in your thread here. The second half is well why do i want to go down the funnel more, that is brand awareness and community interaction, value add. Same stuff, new
