Can't stop thinking about this person who made the distinction on TikTok between old school social media for being in touch with your friends and making new ones, and "performative" social media where the point is to reach people you don't know.
I think some of the friction between OG mastodonians and the #twitterExodus is that the former were trying to recreate old school, but the latter are coming for performative and angry that it's not built for that
@Dubikan I'm tempted to characterise it as social media versus antisocial media . . . I hope the people wanting to recreate the performative version here never get their way, anyway. Or if they do, that it takes the form of having their own instances that are set up that way and everyone else can decide whether they want anything to do with those depending on what behaviour results.
@timtfj i think its just a different kind of socializing. Also, I'd be very wary of any categorization that leaves me on the "pro-social" side...
@Dubikan @timtfj or define Mastodon as social networking, as opposed to Twitter's commercial social media.
@Liga @timtfj eek, that makes it sound like LinkedIn
@Dubikan @Liga My experience of LinkedIn is limited to a spate of spammy emails from them a few years ago nagging me to join so people from Twitter who I barely knew could "connect with me". That was enough to put me off, really.
@Dubikan @timtfj lmao not really we always called non- commercial social networking.
