Can't stop thinking about this person who made the distinction on TikTok between old school social media for being in touch with your friends and making new ones, and "performative" social media where the point is to reach people you don't know.
I think some of the friction between OG mastodonians and the #twitterExodus is that the former were trying to recreate old school, but the latter are coming for performative and angry that it's not built for that
@Dubikan I'm tempted to characterise it as social media versus antisocial media . . . I hope the people wanting to recreate the performative version here never get their way, anyway. Or if they do, that it takes the form of having their own instances that are set up that way and everyone else can decide whether they want anything to do with those depending on what behaviour results.
@Dubikan I suppose they'd just need an interface where they saw "a quote toot" and everyone else saw a toot with a link. Most likely, we'd get annoyed with the proliferation of those and avoid following people who did it too much. Some do seem really obsessed with it, unfortunately.
