After years of #christmas viewings being paused to play the song on YouTube, it's FINALLY available on #Disney plus. After prepping some cinnamon buns for #xmas breakfast tomorrow, sitting down to watch the whole version without interruption.

@rorystarr Oh my gosh! That is the best news!

I first watched The #MuppetChristmasCarol on VHS and it had Belle’s song, When Love Is Gone, in it. When I got rid of the VHS and replaced it with DVD I realised it was missing and was devastated. The same with the Blu-Ray version.

The song is so moving, stops there being a jarring jump in the film, and prepares the way for the final song which refers back to it.

If you have Disney+ do look out for it!

@truthseeker10 it's in the Extras menu when you click on the movie. Not terribly intuitive but it's there. And I agree. It robs the movie of so much to have it absent.
@rorystarr @truthseeker10 I'm excited! I had the VHS version that had the song as well. I've always missed it.

@truthseeker10 @rorystarr

😮 Today I learnt... Thank you!

Even without the song, the scene was so touching and important in filling out Scrooge as a character, giving you a way into his humanity. Without seeing his regret, he would just be a dull nasty person.

So happy to find out there is this greatly extended version with its own song!

@FediThing @rorystarr I’m so glad you found and enjoyed the version with the song! It does help fill in the gaps about Scrooge coming to be as he did. I think it makes the ending even more uplifting, with the When Love Is Found song harkening back to When Love Is Gone & completing the cycle of Scrooge’s redemption.

I used to have to pause the film, the. Find and watch the missing song on YouTube, then continue with the film I missed it so much. (Yes, I know, I’m soppy! 😂)

@truthseeker10 @FediThing that's exactly what I used to do as well. I did have the VHS version as well but it was in "full screen" which wasn't really any better than missing a scene of the movie.

@rorystarr @FediThing Annoyingly, I’d got rid of my VHS copy when I bought the DVD. It wasn’t until I watched that the following Christmas I made the awful discovery! 😂

Debating whether it’s too late to start watching it now (it’s 9pm here and I’m a bit tired), or save it until tomorrow when I’ll likely enjoy it more.

Maybe a little glass of something alcoholic might help me decide … 😇😉

@truthseeker10 @rorystarr

I looked the song up on YouTube and the comments were full of people who used to pause the DVD, watch the YT video, then go back to the video.

So, I think someone at Disney cottoned on to this phenomenon!

Weirdest is that some DVDs had this song as an extra? The publishers could have just as easily offered it to play within the film itself as the video material was already on the disc.

@FediThing I didn’t know that some DVDs had it included or I’d have tried hunting one down — people have been up in arms about it for years!

I’d read that the scene and song weren’t present on any DVDs, Blu-Rays, the iTunes Store or any streamed copies. Maybe it was present in some country-specific releases.

I think I read that at one point Disney were claiming the original footage had been lost, so the scene couldn’t be retrieved. But then somehow a copy was found! 🤷‍♂️

@truthseeker10

"at one point Disney were claiming the original footage had been lost"

Doesn't sound very convincing. I wonder what the real story was?

A disagreement with the singer? Some kind of rights issue? Some executive who didn't like the song? Perhaps we will never find out.

@FediThing That’s essentially what happened — executives at Disney felt the song was ‘too adultI’ and kids would get restless. Henson agreed it could be cut from the cinema release, as long as it was reinstated for the VHS and DVD.

But when the time came to prepare the digital version … the negative has gone AWOL! (And apparently is still missing!)

@truthseeker10

Ahh! Interesting... 🤔 Thanks!

@FediThing By the way, I see you look after the fedi.tips website? Thank you so much for it! Someone posted the link to it just after I joined here and it’s been most useful! 👍

@truthseeker10

Aw, cheers!

Very glad to hear it is useful!

I've taken day off today but will try to get back to answering queries tomorrow.
