I'm not, as I've mentioned, a portrait photographer, and I rarely took family photos over the years. But on the way home from taking my dad to dinner on Thanksgiving a decade ago, the light was just right and I grabbed this quick snapshot. It turned out to have been the last Thanksgiving I had with him.

Sometimes photos unexpectedly become a precious gift for your future self.

@mattblaze I spent many hours 3d printing lithopanes of my mother for her memorial service last week. Went through old photo albums with my sister to choose several. It was a good project to have a distraction from everything else.

@mattblaze I got a photo of my mum and dad together after visiting them on the way home from an interstate trip. Turned out to be the last time I’d see them together at home. Those photos become truly precious.

@mattblaze My family says I take too many pictures. "Aw Dad, not another!". But while I have never regretted taking a digital picture (even a horrible one I deleted later), I have often regretted missing a picture I wish I had taken. As you said, "Sometimes, photos unexpectedly become a precious gift for your future self."
