@Abstruse there’s the quote that’s attributed to John Adams that goes something like “I study war so my children can study mathematics so their children can study poetry”. It’s basically that!
@Abstruse My hardscrabble Fukushima farm ancestors watching me eat a warm breakfast warm inside while it's 8 degrees outside: "She's old and alive and not starving or freezing to death! We did good."

me, ordering a a large flat bread with thick layer after layer of all kind of food stuff and covered with cheese - brought within minutes at my doorstep

my ancestors: NIIIIIIIICE 😎
@Abstruse

@Abstruse the OP of that thread is a dear friend of mine. I'm glad to see she has achieved meme immortality.
@Brendan @Abstruse Tell her a rando on the internet says thanks cause she brought joy to the world.
@Abstruse Sometimes I feel this way flushing a toilet. Most often after a week spent backpacking and digging catholes.
@Abstruse often wonder what my Great Grandfather, who survived the Great hunger would make of my life.
@Abstruse My ancestors, watching me unwrap a gift i had already bought for myself years ago and still have in the bottom of my nightstand underneath a heaping pile of other shit from China: “What the fuck? Seriously, WHAT THE FUCK”
@Abstruse People in the Early Modern period would be astonished by the modern use of the word "vanilla"

@Abstruse I'd rather it had said "so well insulated", rather than "so well heated", but apart from that, great!

9/10 people living like the 1/10000 of old is seriously wonderful.

@Abstruse THIS! THIS! THIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSS!

@Abstruse

I've the windows open because I've shite-all ventilation otherwise and if I don't crack them the mould gets in.

@Abstruse As opposed to Swedish monarch half a millennium ago I have access to: (mostly) painless dental care, indoor flushing toilets, a home with central heating, fresh apples in February, medial care they would have dismissed as fairy tales, God granted miracle or witchcraft, and truly waterproof clothes for when it rains.

They, on the other hand, could have their detractors and opponents killed.

@Abstruse When I get old, please someone remind me ACT LIKE THIS, instead of going down the usual conservative fear-ridden path?

(Which is just basically being narcissistic, manipulative and possibly self-loathing because you think the next generation somehow failed you or you failed them.)

Anyone who doesn’t place their trust in the next generation doesn’t understand evolution. And maybe there is a hint where to look for the answer, in addition to fear.

@Abstruse Since my grandmother was puzzled that I went into higher education rather than getting a trade and buying a van, I’m not sure that my ancestors would recognise me as having anything to do with them.
