@nitinb why would you create an account on multiple hosts?
Hachyderm.io

Hachyderm is a safe space, LGBTQIA+ and BLM, primarily comprised of tech industry professionals world wide. Note that many non-user account types have restrictions - please see our About page.

Mastodon hosted on hachyderm.io
@hansvl Ben begonnen op mastadon.social, maar dat is zoveel ruis (ook omdat iedereen eerst denkt dat dat de main server is. Hier idem)
@hansvl @nitinb partly error - the first one I signed up months ago and then didn’t use and forgot . When I Came back on I just signed up again and randomly got this one which I use the most. Then the third one I signed up because it was local to where I lived. It’s nice and quieter and I use to see lighter topics.
@hansvl there are some hosts like hachyderm.io or infosec.exchange that have focused tech communities. You can’t possibly follow everyone on there if you are on a different host but if you are on that host you can watch the local feed and get all the wisdom of that mini crowd. Just an experiment I am doing.
@nitinb @hansvl it’s a paid app, but “Toot!” let’s you add servers without an account and you can follow the local/federated feed. Here’s mine.
@nitinb @hansvl yes this is a problem I have got exactly the same instances. Need a science feed, a infosec feed, a developer feed etc.

@nitinb @hansvl Really wish I could join multiple instances with one stable identity, and direct posts to whichever fits best but let followers see all of them.

All my best social media experiences, over decades, have come from letting my networks collide in unexpected ways.

@wrigleyfield Oh yes - the random collisions that occur can indeed be the best. Albeit my second account on the 'verse to date has no use - was an accident and an exercise in not reading what I'm doing. No harm done that said.
@wrigleyfield @nitinb @hansvl You can make your identities on various servers follow one another; boosts will be spread around all identities. Not as good as unified followers/followings, but still useful.
@hansvl @nitinb got one for my personal and one for my company
@hansvl @nitinb Stay in touch/read people from different fedi bubbles that are not accessible due to (mostly unilateral) suspension.
@hansvl @nitinb for me it's one for lewd stuff and one for evdrything else. Also it's nice to have some other instance if one is down for a bit.

@hansvl @nitinb

Reasons to run multiple masto accounts:

- Split between official (with real life name) and unofficial (eg kinks)
- Split between business and hobbies
- Split between interests: eg poetry vs tech stuff
- One account for each language
- Enjoy different server features and rules
- Leave your small masto bubble (and stay in various small masto bubbles)

I am on #pleroma 😎 does it count?
@abid yes any ActivityPub host is what I really meant.
@nitinb Voted 3 or more. Not on purpose - finally wound my way through a rather confusing (to me) sign up process.
None of the above. I use Hubzilla and Neuhub, which can talk to Mastodon via ActivityPub.
@scott sure, I should have said ActivityPub not Mastodon
@nitinb I voted two because that’s the number I’m certain of. It’s entirely possible I have other undocumented accounts. This is a gigantic (imo) problem with mastodon
@nitinb is the problem that you don't remember all the accounts you have created? It doesn't feel like a big issue to me
@Nitin B This particular account "speaks" Mastodon (ActivityPub), but isn't Mastodon: it's Hubzilla.

I still count it as Mastodon for this poll though. Then again, even without this one, I have more than 3 accounts on real Mastodon servers, most of them as admin.
@nitinb 3, not because I want but because the Fediverse is really fragmented
@nitinb One so far whilst I'm still finding my feet but in the New Year I intend to join two more 😀
@nitinb Do new here don’t understand the significance of the question!
@nitinb I answered two but one of them is a Pleroma instance. I'm assuming you meant Social Web/Fediverse and not just Mastodon.
@splicer yes meant to say ActivityPub instance
@nitinb 3! My main, this one, my old one I transferred from, and the one I have to follow a local feed of a cool little community I can occasionally contribute to. And that is holding back. Imagine using Discord and needing a new account for each server?
@nitinb you can have more than one account???
Just create an account on a different instance

Yup. And pinafore.social, for one, makes it easy to switch.

@nitinb

@nitinb do you mean just federated ones?
@egallager meant account on any ActivityPub instance not just Mastodon
@nitinb on my "list" I recorded "damn, f-n 8 instances!, but one is gone now, and I only periodically check 2 others... so 3
@nitinb 2. One for my personal account here and one for my podcast on another server.

@nitinb

I see that 2 is winning at 100% LOL

@anne_twain takes a while for the instances to catch up.
@nitinb
I had 3 but never used one, so I closed it
@nitinb do bot accounts count?
@sn interesting! Hadn’t thought of that but why not, sure.
@nitinb two, but only because I forgot I'd set the other one up, am considering another just to cover topics that don't really fit in with my creative work.
@nitinb the real question is: how many instances do you run 😊
@willem thank you for my next poll question 😀. But seriously that will be a very very small minority - most people run zero.
@nitinb most people, yes. But certainly not zero. It actually not that hard 😊
@willem yes def not zero I am experimenting, myself.

@nitinb
One, though I moved instances once, so there's a little bit of the old account left.

I also have a Pixelfed account (Pixelfed is to Instagram what Mastodon is to Twitter, more or less, and you can follow Pixelfed account on Mastodon and vice versa), and a Matrix account, which is federated, but doesn't use ActivityPub.

I'm considering adding PeerTube to the mix.

@nitinb I have accounts on three hosts; one personal, one for work (@npdc), one for a hobby (@geohashing). Only the personal one is fully maintained by hand, the other 2 are mainly bot posts.
Is it important that it has to be on "mastodon"? I have many more accounts on other fediverse platforms.. 😉
@nitinb I didn't know accounts on multiple mastodon servers were a thing. How does that work and what are the benefits of having many over simply one?
@nitinb My answer strictly is "1", but I currently have 3 accounts on ActivityPub instances, but only one is on a Mastodon server.
@nitinb however I have a funkwhale, pixelfed, lemmy and plume accounts.. plus extra ones for the podcast.
@nitinb two not counting ones I've migrated from
@nitinb i only have one account currently on a self hosted instance (albeit not a mastodon one) but considering its self hosted i should probably set up an alt elsewhere
