hey backpackers, what do yall do for winter layers for pants?? I went on a walk today to test my winter set up (-33 F wind chill) and everything was warm except my legs. Wind pants? insulating layers? do they make wool pants?? give a gal some advice

@beffie It’s never that cold here but I start by adding my rain pants, which should help with the wind.
@andrewbriscoe yeah my worst issue was definitely the wind getting through. but I think even fixing that it wasn't quite warm enough 😬
@beffie Makes sense. I think a “long underwear/base layer” would probably be the next step. Layers are key because you can add or remove as you get cold or warm.
@andrewbriscoe for sure, now I just have to find one I like 🙃
@beffie when I went camping just outside Winnipeg I just used a thermal base layer, snowboarding pants which were not only wind and water proof but pretty hefty as my outer layer, and just normal everyday pants like my joggers or jeans in the middle. And an extra pair of socks of course. -17 was the coldest I saw.
@JucheNB oh like a 3 layer pants system? I might have to try it, I'm just not sure where to find good thermal pants base layer that won't slide up or down too much when I'm hiking 🤔
@beffie I find the Heattech stuff by Uniqlo is so good for base layers. It’s thin so doesn’t bulk you up, but keeps the heat in nicely and you can double, triple them up if you need to.
@beffie I use long underwear (wool or synthetic), a pair of synthetic pants, and if it's really windy I wear rain pants over those. I have a pair of Wintergreen Guide pants that work as a wind shell, and I have a pair of Outdoor Research Cirque Lite Pants that work the same way. With wool long underwear and either the Wintergreen or OR pant, I'm good down to -15-20°F.
