This time, Elon had a long Twitter Spaces conference earlier and it's quite a doozy...

these are the clowns running the circus. they have no clue

elon: "we need to rewrite everything in this crazy stack."

guy: "what exactly is so 'crazy' about the twitter stack that necessitates a complete rewrite?"

elon: "goodbye. what a moron."

"Listening to this Twitter Spaces where Elon is talking about the tech stack and it's clear that no one has been in a position to actually ask him a follow up question in years. He thinks he knows everything and simply will not abide someone contradicting that notion.

Right after I sent this he demanded someone be cut off because he was pointing out correctly how ads work on the internet. Literally just said "cut him off"

getting dunked on by Schiff lol

Pretty funny thread in which OP backpedals for 12 hours. Hotz is a transparent clout goblin who couldn't hack it as an engineer, very sad!

Who wants to bet that "weird political defenses" were things like "that's a legal requirement in X countries".

Can't imagine why they wouldn't be excited about changing around everything after losing like 90% of their workforce that's actually capable of implementing large changes, and no desire to take on a FUCKING GIANT workload when there's basically nobody left with the knowledge to fix shit when Elon's rushed changes and demands inevitably cause shit to catch fire.

elon: I think frankly if we're gonna have a really high velocity of features I uh uh think we need to do just a total rewrite of the whole thing. You know, um

idg (former twitter dev): Wait, seriously, a total rewrite, that's your prediction for velocity?

elon: Yeah.

idg: Well, when you say a total rewrite, do you mean starting with a skeleton, or a bunch of engineers sit down with a whiteboard and say "what is twitter?"

elon: Uh, <silence>

idg: Revolution or reform?

elon: I mean I mean literally like you could either try to amend the crazy stack that exists, or rewrite it.

idg: When you say crazy stack, what do you mean? Like, break it down.

elon: <silence> Have you seen George's, like, diagram?

idg: no no I mean like what do you mean by crazy?

Elon: <interrupts with gibberish>

idg: C'mon bud, c'mon

elon: Who are you?

idg: What do you mean who am I? I dunno, you gave me the fuckin' mic.

<crosstalk over mic bullshit>

idg: Like no no you're in charge of the servers and programing, whatever. Like what is the stack, Elon? C'mon man, take me from top to bottom. What does the stack look like right now? What's so crazy about it? What's so abnormal about this stack versus every other large scale system on the planet, buddy? C'mon.

elon: Amazing. Wow, you're a jackass.

geohotz: Ok ok let's keep this civil, we've removed him from speakers.

elon: good. What a moron."

lol what a thin skin dumbass

whoever called the "he's a very special boy, top of his class, and you're not respecting HOW SPECIAL he is" come claim your prize

"you want me to work with others?!? what the fuck is wrong with you, you should just be keeping them out of my way!!!"

So when boywonder says "political" he means organizational. Y'know. "Who has the capacity and familiarity to get shifted to the new task? Do we bring in new folks?"

This dude's a dipshit.

it's almost like people who can't work with others have a vested interest in perpetuating the "brilliant jerk" myth

when geohotz says twitter was political he's mad because they put the login wall back up after he removed it because all their metrics are based on daily average users and they need you to login to count. musk claims they're going to move to 'unregretted user minutes' as the primary metric but i have zero idea how they are going to measure that

you also can't really show ads (profitably) to users who aren't logged in (especially on mobile) which is another reason geohotz is an idiot who doesn't understand the business

he's also mad they don't want to move all their ml inference stuff from tfserving to his shitty home grown thing

apparently twitter is blocking GV from SMS now lol

i'm sure nobody was using it

https://www.engadget.com/twitter-google-voice-2fa-authentication-sms-195145660.html

Engadget is part of the Yahoo family of brands

According to musk in the full-length Spaces chat Twitter was getting "scammed" something like $13MM/yr from Telcos with SMS fees for 2FA for bogus accounts. He said once he found out about this he told his staff, "any Telco that has higher than a 10% scam rate, cut them off." He said that this resulted in something like 389 Telcos being shuttered from service with Twitter because they were all scamming Twitter. I guess GV was one of these lol

He said he told his staff to strong arm the Telcos into lowering their fees on SMS. No doubt a Trumpian move, break shit and threaten to leave until they give you what you want.

losing 300 mil a month and making an unannounced feature change to save 1 is some boy genius shit

they also cut off fucking Vodafone but didn’t disable SMS-based 2FA for affected accounts, so those users can’t even log in

iirc users with token-based 2FA who registered Vodafone numbers also can’t log in because they disabled all 2FA prompting, not just SMS sending

lol that the new status icons don't pass basic WCAG. i bet the aria-label still has the same text for all of them, too, like when lonny first added the $8 blue boys

lol at the idea of musk getting someone else to be CEO and then hanging around fucking everything up by being "head of engineering" or whatever it was.

just imagine how bad a job it would be having to deal with his bullshit all the time as you desperately try to pull the company out of a stall

and it's really geohot and Musk telling on themselves that they've never actually developed anything more complex than could be run as a monolith or a group of services on a single box.

Don't forget that Musk had to be kicked out of PayPal before he could rollover everything from Linux to Windows, and his dev skills seemingly haven't modernized one bit from there. The idea that there'd be so many different services doing different roles that it's not reasonable to build and run it all on a single machine is alien to them both; neither of them have likely ever written any code in an environment with that level of complexity.

Oh, and Musk fired everyone who could explain it to them, assuming either of them would even listen to and then retain anything those devs told them.

he really is the Idea Guy that downloads GameMaker and starts looking for the MMO checkbox

that court transcript has a nice bit of total bullshit where he lays out exactly how he wants to be seen

"Q. In fact, when you became the CEO of Tesla many years before, were you already the CEO of any other companies?

A. Yes. I was running SpaceX. I should say the CEO role at SpaceX and also at Tesla, it’s less about the CEO but, rather, that I am the one driving the technology."

https://www.theverge.com/2022/12/22/23465042/elon-musk-tesla-ceo-compensation-trial-full-transcript

So at SpaceX, it’s really that I am responsible for the engineering of the rockets; and at Tesla, for the technology, you know, in the car that makes it successful. So CEO is often viewed as somewhat of a business-focused role, but in reality, my role is much more that of an engineer developing technology and just making sure that we develop breakthrough technologies and that we have a team of incredible engineers who can achieve those goals.

And it is my experience that great engineers will only work for a great engineer, and so I — that is what I — that is my first duty, not that of CEO."

He's so in charge that middle management has to give him stuff to look at to keep him from firing critical personnel.

musk comes in and writes on a whiteboard "IDEA: rocket should go UP", underlines the last word 4 times as his inner circle all nods and fawns over how brilliant that idea is, then goes back to arguing with nobody on twitter

He's said before that to learn anything you just need to read a book. And that's what he did with rocket science. He just read a book on rockets, and then knew everything about rocket science. Pretty sure that's almost an exact quote.

How Elon Musk Learned Rocket Science For SpaceX

Jim Cantrell helped Musk launch SpaceX and was blown away by Musk's intelligence and determination.

this sounds positively delightful to database engineers, but i'm also looking forward to see how deranged people get after this

"It's sooo alive! Don't let the loss of revenue and layoffs and code fails and fly-by-wire policy making fool you. The VIEWS will prove this is a stable company."

yeah sure keep firing the people who tell you when something you want to do is illegal

@cspam what’s even funnier is that the first sentence of that article is a lie. He has a fake diploma that was bought for him when his first CEO realised that he was in the US illegally because he had dropped out of university without a degree.

(And I’d argue that two bachelors degrees isn’t really that impressive, you basically just have to turn up to exams get a bachelors - source: personal experience)

@cspam That's been going on for a while. About a year ago, I lost access to my account because a bunch of TERFs decided to report me for stating the facts, and Twitter wouldn't let me use my GV number -- which is the only number I use anywhere; I don't give out my direct line numbers. So I said "fuck it" and left the site entirely.
@cspam If there ends up being an official unit for measuring regret, I think we should call it the "Musk."
@cspam
Non I have no regretted user minutes.
@cspam yes a big part of being a software engineer is working with people in your organization to get things done that’s right 🫠
@cspam that exchange told me everything. I’ve used buzzwords like that before with sr execs that called me on it and it’s embarrassing when you don’t know what is under them. I learned that when I was 30. He powered out of it because he can, but he still doesn’t know what he is talking about.
