Today I finished binging Rachel Maddow's 8-part podcast series, "Ultra," about the insurrectionists who planned to violently overthrow the U.S. government in the late 1930s and early 1940s. They had backing from Nazi Germany, had support from top congressional Republicans, and promoted fascist ideals in support of racist and antisemitic goals. The parallels to our current situation are striking. It's appalling that the whole affair has been forgotten. Recommended. https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-presents-ultra
Rachel Maddow Presents: Ultra | an MSNBC original podcast

Sitting members of Congress aiding and abetting a plot to overthrow the government. Insurrectionists criminally charged with plotting to end American democracy for good. Justice Department prosecutors under crushing political pressure. Rachel Maddow Presents: Ultra is the all-but-forgotten true story of good, old-fashioned American extremism getting supercharged by proximity to power. When extremist elected officials get caught plotting against America with the violent ultra right, this is the story of the lengths they will go to… to cover their tracks. Follow now and join Rachel Maddow for the first two episodes on October 10th.

@waldoj is that the same events behind the movie “Amsterdam”?
@atlauren It’s not—this was several years later, and much larger.
@waldoj I'm only a couple episodes in, and LOVING it!
@waldoj I also just finished listening to it a couple of days ago! As they say, history doesn’t repeat, but it rhymes.
@waldoj Hardly surprising, though. At least if you ask me. And that's sad to say. It really shows that although the civil war came to an end, the source of the conflict was never dealt with. Basically, two entirely different countries were forced to merge into one.

@waldoj

I haven't finished it yet (2 more episodes to go) but it is amazing how familiar it all feels and that I never heard about it in high school or college in spite of several classes that covered that time period in US history.

@waldoj It's triffic, gripping, compelling, and highly-relevant stuff. But ... it's worth noting there were prominent congressional Democrats in that brood of vipers, too.

And, to be honest, also the most disappointing Harry Truman moment ever.

@waldoj Excellent podcast. I listened as it was released, but I'll probably binge it all at once sometime.
