"Local" is real-time posts from your own instance. "Federated" is real-time posts from across the fediverse (all instances that you can access through your own).

riscy@SpockResists the instance I was on went down one day, and on #mastodon someone suggested I try this site (I am on another instance as well, which was how I got notified).
The site told me instantly mstdn.social was down.
