Chris TrottierPeople keeping asking me why the 2nd biggest Mastodon instance, pawoo.net, got de-federated.
There's many reasons, but the main one: there's pedo content on there.
ocdtrekkie@atomicpoet I think over time we'll see federations and defederations model the same differing values and norms of the countries they serve, either for social or legal reasons.
I think this particular issue is a core example of how the entire Internet being one unified open communication layer doesn't really totally make sense.

Lucy B@Ijio @atomicpoet My understanding of it is that each instance’s admin decides. My admin provides a list with reasons, regarding which instances we are defederated from. I can not access these instances, nor do I have a desire to.

To see a list of which servers yours restricts, go to <server url>/about and expand the "Moderated Servers" list.
You can also personally block all traffic from any instance, as you would block an individual user.
73 million seconds@djdesign @lucybeahere @Ijio @atomicpoet Not all instances make that information public it seems. At least that's how I've interpreted the message that sometimes shows instead of the list.
@73ms @lucybeahere @Ijio @atomicpoet I saw that on this.mouse.rocks, yeah... I wondered if they restricted the info to users of that instance, or if it was fully private. 🤔
Raine@Ijio instances can block other instances in the admin/mod settings, so no communication is possible between their users. In my experience I don’t have to do anything for my own instance because my network already doesn’t connect with many bad instance.
